Have to say I think we're going to want him to pull a Tim Thomas and sit out but not retire so we can use his cap hit to get to the floor.

A draft pick isn't that important.

Easy to have 20/20 hindsight on this contract but the fact is that it made Kipper affordable in the old CBA. I am ok with this, the thought of a rejuvenated Kipper taking the Leafs on a long playoff does not sit well in my stomach.

Wrong. Kiprusoff did not play 10 seasons for you, me, or any other Flames fan. He did it for himself. He deserves to go out on his own terms like any other human being. This is not the same as making a warranty claim on an appliance.

The guy is retiring as a Flame, which we ALL KNEW he was going to do when that contract was signed. That time is now. Get over it.
|
Dumb? You tell that to the thousands of worker up in Fort Mac living in Camp away from their families. They are willing to do it to pay bills and provide for their families. This guy is making Millions of Dollars, he committed to a contract, similar to hundreds of other players in the NHL, but he wants to be the only one to dictate his future, even though his contract says he isn't in control of that.
The Calgary Flames are allowed to trade him and his contract to any other team in the NHL, and because he threw a temper tantrum, he killed his trade value, and now will retire without the Flames getting anything. And I get that he is allowed to retire. Then be a man, honor your contract. If you want to retire, then retire, don't be a Lindros.

This guy has no contractual rights to reject trades. Really puts the Flames in a bad position. This should be nice and awkward from here on in.

If he can they should waive him. Force his stupid retirement which he apparently knew all about. And is probably why his stats tanked this season and he doesn't give a $hit.
No wonder on ice has been all over, the inmates are running this asylum. What other players feel they have this entitlement?
Time to send a message!

It is, its business, you have to realize value. There is no value to be realized with him retiring early.

When did our franchise move north and start calling themselves the Oilers?
Get a grip on yourselves. Kiprusoff has more than earned the right to walk away on his own accord.

Kipper should have known better than to say this on trade deadline day when fans are in a frenzy.

Don't care about any of these player's feelings. Don't care for our supposed "star" goalie mailing in the rest of the season. Don't care for Kipper's family issues that everyone in the world has to deal with and still go in and do an honest day of work. Don't care about his legacy. Don't care for him to retire as a Flame. Even a 6th round pick is better than nothing.
Damn I'm bitter about this news. Thank God this will be his last season. So long and good riddance.

I think Kipper is at peace now having made a decision and will blank the Greasers tonight.

His number #34 will be in the rafters just a little sooner than #12. Hopefully no more of this "honouring" garbage. Straight up retire it.

Without Kipper this team would have not made the cup in 04, would not have won the division after the lockout, and would not have stayed competitive after that.
He saved this franchise. I don't have time to lookup stats but he probably played more games than any other goalie in the league post-lockout (04/05)... He's 23rd all-time in wins. He's the only Flame to win the Vezina.
That's a guy who's jersey you retire and that's a guy who all Flames fans should respect. Sure, he should've been traded when his value was high, but that didn't happen. Let's all be thankful Sutter got him in the first place. Let him retire on his own terms, as a Calgary Flame.

If it's a business then the Flames shouldn't have given him such a contract.
Perhaps there was a wink-wink nudge-nudge when the contract was signed that Kipper was going to retire after this year.
If that's the case then it's the Flames that are wronging Kipper by trying to trade him at all.
We don't know.

If he wanted to reject trades then he should have asked for a no-trade until the end of the contract.
