Yeah, hopefully the 2013 is comparable to the 2004...

Looking at the schedules, I actually would not be surprised if Calgary finished dead last. We'll probably see even more veterans moved out and if Giordano keeps playing like he is they are good for a 1 or 2 goal deficit every game.

Should we lay down to St. Louis to help them get into 8th? Lol

They were saying that the top players were really good and then it dropped off. Even then only 3 of the top 14 busted completely which is decent. In the back half of the round only 5 players are doing okay, with the second round looking more like the average 7th round in terms of developing good players (Subban Spaling and Simmonds only)

This year is better than that.

"The 2007 draft has a wide open feel and while it lacks the sexy top end prospects, it is loaded with solid depth. Plenty of players from this class will fill roles in the NHL, but very few will be stars.
[...]
Top Goal Scorers
1. C Kyle Turris, BCHL – Joe Sakic like release and can release it at full speed.
2. RW Patrick Kane, OHL – No one can shoot the puck more accurately through traffic than Kane.
3. RW Alexei Cherepanov, RUS – No one finds the open nice near the net better than Cherepanov.
4. C Oscar Moller, WHL – Possesses innate ability to find the puck in heavy traffic and owns a heavy shot.
5. RW Aaron Palushaj, USHL – Thomas Vanek like ability to bear down in front and finish.

Best Play Makers
1. RW Jakub Voracek, QMJHL – Vision, creativity, and ability to pass the puck with the opposition all over him are unmatched in this draft. Might not have the most assist of this class as a junior, but his play making ability translates better than the others to the NHL.
2. C Sam Gagner, OHL – Power play quarterback extraordinaire from the half wall.
3. C Zach Hamil, WHL – Future power play dynamo.
4. RW Simon Hjalmarsson, SWE – Creativity and instincts are through the roof.
5. RW Max Pacioretty, USHL – Patient with the puck and exploits the open creases in the defense with a deft passing game."

Definitely not big 1st round names you'd hope to see in a draft class.

Also to highlight the sparcity of talent in the 2007 draft:
"High Risk High Reward
2. RW Akim Aliu, OHL – Has already been traded twice in his brief OHL career for attitude problems. First round talent but has some real character issues."

Bring on the draft. I think we can probably get one more 1st round pick between now & then. If we finish 29th, draft Mackinnon & package some picks for another top 5 pick we can get Drouin as well. That would be our Kane & Toews sorted.

Although this is from a weaker draft year, I think it illustrates exactly why we need to trade up to get another pick in the top 10, if not top 5. Outside of the top 10, generally the percentage chance of a pick panning out to more than just an NHL capable player drops off significantly. Like others said, the best thing Flames management can do is to idiot-proof this draft for themselves as best they can. Top 5 are no-brainers. Top 5-10 are pretty straight forward too (Lindholm, Monahan, Nurse, Pulock, Shinkaruk). The last thing we want is to trade away our beloved Jarome, Jay, and subsequently tanking the season, only to have 1/3 picks really turn out for us.

This is the great part about Edmonton getting their "suck" on a few years before us... We get to learn from all their mistakes. Cut some corners.

Colorado is an example of why size matters. Their best players are all small. If you look at teams with successful rebuilds, their best players are mostly bigger.

That's why if it comes down to McKinnon vs Barkov, I'd go with Barkov just because of that. Drouin looks to be a cut above everyone though.

Barkov sidelined indefinitely with a shoulder injury:

This seems to be another good reason for targeting Sean Monahan instead

I want Drouin too. But to do it, we need to get another pick in the top 7 or 8 so we can pick a Monahan or Lindholm or another center available down there. I just think that Drouin's too dynamic to pass on.

I see the NHL penalizing the Flames for tanking.

Just because they're the Flames.

I want Drouin badly. I think he is the type of dynamic talent the Flames need to build around. Sure, it would be nice to have that big center in Mackinnon but at this point the Flames have more than just the center position hole to fill. Take the best player in the draft if you get a chance.

Yes Flames are in no position to be drafting anything other than BPA.

Even if the Flames finish 30th, they will find a way to lose the lottery.

Although I want the flames to get a top 3 pick, it's really depressing to see good players like Backs or Gio or even Taungay so miserable and down. Iggy was the spirit of the team.

You make it sound it like it would be difficult or something. It is 'expected' the last place team loses the lottery. 25% chance on winning it, 75% chance on losing it, no? I would assume the Flames would indeed be picking 2nd over-all if they finish 30th, and hoping they win the lottery to draft 1st.

I just want us to finish 3rd so we don't get screwed out of the top 4.
