I have noticed two subtle trends, every time other teams trade their vets - OMG robbed, great return, and every time Feaster makes a trade - wow you fools you expected more than a bag of pucks?

I'm not too happy about this deal. The way I look at it, with the 1st rounder is there a chance it'll end up being a player at least equal to Bouwmeester? Doubt it. I'm happy that if the Blues don't make the playoffs it slides to next year, but again, Flames management got relatively fleeced. Even if they took back $1M, I'd have thought they'd get a blue chip prospect back. Enough with the crappy farm players.

When did 1st round picks become worthless?

Seriously people, take a deep breath and think.

I'd wonder about being excited for UFA's when I can't imagine any reason they would want to come. But there are still some solid guys out there in the mid to late 20's: Weiss, Bouchard, Roy, Horton, MacArthur, Filppula, Clarkson, Raymond, Latendresse, Santorelli, Bozak. Again, not sure why most of those guys would come other than the team was offering way above market value.

There are some good RFA's out there as well.

RFA - you tend to overpay, trying to scare teams with loaded contracts (which ultimately penalizes your team as well) and you have to give up draft picks as compensation
his current -11 play has been so good we are in 14th place

1st round picks is now giving our players away

glad some reasonable people showed up tonight...i actually feel pretty good about our team going forward especially if we get more picks/prospects for kipper.

if we get one (or both) of mackinnon or drouin and add some decent FA's (or buy outs) then i can see playoff contention next year...as long as we get decent goaltending from one of the euros.

And a pony. And Crosby and Malkin. And a date to the Oscars with Jennifer Lawrence.

Again, anybody who thinks that teams are lining up to give up premium young talent and high draft picks for two months of a no-longer-elite forward with a NTC and a merely good defenseman with a cap hit comparable to Zdeno Chara's is completely delusional. You can argue that someone could have gotten marginally more, but the return on both deals was entirely reasonable.

Well based on rumors certainly it seemed like the Flames were looking for someone else that could maybe play this next season- Bernier, Scrivens, etc. And now Yogi.

If I'm guessing we'll see Berra, Ramo and McDonald all in camp next year.

Long-term I like Gillies.

Currently only 2 teams have more than one first round pick. The last time a team not named Calgary traded for a first rounder was Columbus in the summer for Rick Nash.

Maybe this draft truly is as deep as some have said, and these 1st rounders are being valued as such.

...or maybe we just have an incompetent GM. Guess we'll see.

At this point we can only cheer for the prospects we've gotten and look forward to draft day but this management has left me feeling completely devoid of any confidence in them.
What's it like working for the Flames?

Is there anything else you can tell us with the same utmost certainty?

Three first rounders in the deepest draft for quite some time. Huge plus! Really crossing my fingers that these two other players aren't junk.

That's the wrong way to look at it IMO. Sure we won't get anyone of Bouwmeester quality, but truthfully, the Flames were a couple of players (maybe 2 or 3) away from making the playoffs. More players yet of making even the second round. This would cost more than the Flames prospects/picks that we could even hope to be able to afford to give up. The clock is ticking, and if we're back in the playoffs in 3-4 years, Bouwmeester is 32-33 years old. Probably still at similar money, and playing MAYBE as good as he has this year. Maybe worse.

When you assess these things you have to factor in that players age, and that sometimes a team IS years away from playoffs, as much as it sucks. If we didn't get SOMETHING for Iginla, we could have potentially got nothing at all instead. If we're 2-3 years away, and Iginla stayed, he's not the player in 3 years he is even today, and certainly far from his prime.

Wouldn't be shocked to see Gillies turn pro sooner than we expect.

To add to the capspace comments, I can see the value in having lots of it, not only because of potential UFAs (which I think is just a bad idea for this summer) but how many teams are going to need to be creative in dealing with the new cap space. Seeing as the Flames weren't willing to take back salary on Bouwmeester, I'm hoping they'll move in on the cap struggling teams and turn capspace into actual assets.

And as said, we'll see.

Last thing, I'm expecting Stempniak to be moved at the very least so that's another 2.5M off next year. There's only so much space you can have before it becomes redundant...

A 1st and 2 prospects for Bouwmeester. Absolutely wonderful. We're rid of his iron man record and his salary. I would have taken a bag of broken pucks to be done with him.
