Teams for the playoffs? Blues and Pens, hope both fall in the first round.

Yup. People were talking about a buyout before this year. Now we walk away with a first. Jbo, was decent offensively, but led the worst defence in the league.

The key here is this is going all in for the top pick this year with all the trades. The Flames will finally be in positon to draft a true impact player.

Just admit you're ignorant of these players, being emotional about it, and move on.

Do you think Calgary got good value in the trade?
I think we got fleeced... The only good thing is we are racing to the bottom, just like TB did...can't possibly blow the number one pick (hopefully)

This. Comparing this trade to the Regehr trade misses the fact that Regehr isn't making $6.6 million, with the cap about to be cut $10 million. Salary is a big deal -- at $3 million a year Bouwmeester would be hugely valuable, but at $6.6 he's a good player being paid as if he's Chara or Karlsson, and what you're paying him means another player you can't acquire or keep.

The general consensus on HF Boards is that this was a great deal for St. Louis. Most of them didn't even know who Berra was and others said that Cundari is a tweener and won't make it in the NHL. For them this was a steal.

Only really disappointed in our owners being cheap. Would have liked to see us eat 2 mil and get a 2nd or better prospect ala us trading kotaik to buffalo.

I had no idea so many posters on CP followed prospects so closely to be able to judge this as a horrible trade based on the prospects coming back! I'm surprised you guys aren't working for some team in the NHL! Get to it experts!

Fleeced? People here vastly underestimate the value of cap space.

I really like that they acquired Reto Berra. A few things about him:
a) His contract is up with Biel this season.
b) He was named to the NLA's All-Star Team last season.
c) He was named Goalie of the Year last season.
d) He was an NLA champion with Davos in 08/09
I like this pick up. Can't hurt to stockpile goalies.

Pre-game on Sportnet they were talking to Feaster and I have to agree with what he finished with - the cap space saved in these moves is a huge asset that isn't being mentioned and gives us a ton of flexibility come free agency and trades.
I still hate the condition, but I'd bet this was best deal on the table and the Blues had another potential deal lined up and were threatening to go that route instead. Gotta take it if it's about to walk away from you because we're still better off long term because of it.

Considering the Flames won't truly be a good team for a few more years, getting as many 1st round picks as possible is important.

This is how we're gonna build a team that looks like the 1989 Flames in a few years. These first round picks are the only glimmer of hope the team has seen for years.

Cundari looks like a decent player to take a flyer on though. His numbers in junior and the minors have been good. He is short, but being 180lbs at 5'9" suggests he might have some power.
Looking at his youtube highlights, it looks like he plays with a bit of a chip on his shoulder.

Getting rid of that terrible contract, taking no contract back (always part of the equation these days) and landing a decent first round pick is indeed a decent deal.
Any kind of NHL pulse from those two prospects would be a bonus.

I wanted Jay Bouwmeester bought out last summer. I am overjoyed this bum brought back a first rounder, anything else is gravy.

I don't think anyone believes they will spend to the cap, but there is going to be deals out there compared to other seasons.
