While we've gone from outshooting teams at the start of the year to being outshot, our [goals scored - (shots against x NHL average save percentage)] per game is still positive at 0.25. So yeah, T@T's right.

This team sucked for the past 3 years, especially with B Sutter behind the bench. With the shortened season, it just compounded the suckiness of this team. Now with Iggy gone and hopefully others as well, this team will truly suck big time and reach the bottom and we get to see a first or 2nd overall pick for once.

Sad to say, but I became a Flames fan in 2001-02, because of Iginla. The Flames became my favorite club for years, starting with their Cinderella playoff run in 2004, and Kipper at the helm.

Now the Flames are boring, and need to rebuild. That is not happening. Now that Iginla is gone, the Flames must rebuild, or endure a long stretch of mediocrity, or worse.

The team actually isn't boring. The game last night was a train wreck, but it was at least an entertaining one.

Lots of goals against...but never the less entertainment, I guess.

Agreed. This team is terrible defensively and horribly inconsistent, but at least the games are watchable. Under Brent Sutter they were perhaps a bit better in terms of results, but man was it ever a boring product from an entertainment standpoint. I could barely get through the first period of most games last year.

We have one second line, two third lines, and a fourth line.

Still no NHL top line, and now with Iginla gone, Calgary won't have one for a while.

Some people say teams are only as good as your top two lines.

Look at Calgary's top two lines, and compare them to other teams? Doesn't look good.

I hear what you are saying and agree except Jarome has not been a top line player on a good team for awhile.

That's why I equate them to almost being like a 2nd year expansion team. They have a couple of decent players and prospects, but in general, not a lot of anything.

-We have no first liners
-Our depth at centre is terrible and centre is the most important forward position
-We have no #1 d-man
-We lack physicality on defense
-We lack size and strength up front
-Goaltending has been below average this year

Hopefully out of this draft we end up with a franchise centre or a #1 d-man. That will be a big piece moving forward.

You must have forgotten the 2007-08 threads around here of: "Yeah we're winning 2-0 and 3-1, but its not entertaining to watch, so thinking of not bothering watching until the playoffs"

The thing is that it is not a product of the system. The Flames don't give up too many goals due to offensive pressure leading to odd man rushes. The problems are all play in their D zone. Poor coverage and stupid mistakes.

The thought was that if they open it up more, maybe they score enough not to be exposed by the dumb mistakes. But you can't outscore this level of defensive ineptitude.

To answer the thread title... absolutely yes.

For years now, people have bashed the idea of tanking for a few years and drafting high, saying things like "that kind of thinking is reserved for loser organizations like the Oilers". Now suddenly, people seem to be warming up to the idea.

All I can say is it's a damn shame that this rebuild didn't get started several years sooner.

One just needs to watch teams like Penguins and Blackhawks play with speed and physical presence to know how bad Flames really are.
Those teams don't lose intensity for one bit in 60 min, most of the time.

That's the story of these last couple of years, desperately trying to avoid being Oilers only to actually drop below them.

To answer the OP, I think we haven't even seen yet how truly bad this team can be, I think its reasonable to expect their winning (eh) percentage to be ever worse next year.

Strangely enough, losing Iggy has opened my eyes to the fact we have no first line. Having him in the roster made me hallucinate that we had a scoring line, when in actual fact we only had Iginla!

Agree with you 100%. We are a very weak team. With any luck the games continue to be interesting, but we tank enough to draft Jones or Mackinnon. That is essentially the best case scenario. Now I know what it must be like to support the oilers!

Well, one good thing is that when the oilers tanked, the players that were available aren't as good as the guys that will be available in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
