Pretty much the perfect night for the chase for 30th 3-2 Florida Panthers in OT

So the scenario presents itself and Calgary goes on a tear. They make the playoffs. What then. Easier decisions or tougher decisions?

That scenario will not present itself. This team has yet to present a scenario where they win more than two games in a row.

Easy decision. You'd have a team that shows something this current team can't. You'd build around that team and thank Pitts for the draft pick.

4th best PPG draft eligible year in SEL history.

.84 - D. Sedin (50gp)
.74 - P. Forsberg (23gp)
.69 - H. Sedin (49gp)
.63 - E. Lindholm (48gp)
Lindholm is very intriguing. I wouldn't mind the Flames taking him at all. On that same thread in HF, there's a good video of his various plays this year, he's got a little Peter Forsberg in him, doggedness for the puck, strong on his skates, good vision and playmaking.

It's the year of Cs in the draft

And the Flames enter the draft presumably with multiple picks

What do you think the chances are that they come away with no C?

I still think the chances are high management screws up and takes Shinkaruk with a top 5 pick, with all the rumours about how high the Flames are on him.

I'm going to take a guess and say he's the boom-bust potential player of this draft.

Stay the hell away from Barkov. Still needs to serve in the military and is likely to bolt back to the KHL if he's not 100% on board with things here.

Mackinnon or bust. This team needs a friggin center.

He doesn't play in the KHL

I'd be fine with Barkov at 4, and he probably won't bolt to the KHL since he grew up in Finland.

But he is a poor skater and that worries me at the NHL level. I think he is a clear step below MacKinnon/Drouin/Jones.

He gets a rep for his 'poor skating' because it is compared to MacKinnon's. If MacKinnon was playing in the NHL this year, he would be amongst the fastest skaters in the league. There is NOTHING wrong with Barkov's skating - he is average at WORST. He will be fine

It will really be interesting to see if he or MacKinnon end up having the better career. There are both huge pros and cons when comparing the two head-to-head. Barkov is still one of the youngest players in the draft, competing (and EXCELLING) against men already and I think close to or breaking some records for someone his age in Finland... not to mention he is a slick playmaker with excellent vision and super two-way play already.

I am wavering towards MacKinnon myself - just that speed and that motor - but if the Flames pick Barkov if MacKinnon is still on the board, I won't be upset either. Can you imagine having 2 POSSIBLY elite 6'3-6'5 centers on the top two lines? Considering the Flames have invested in Gaudreau and Baertschi - both under the average in the NHL, that makes it kind of formidable.

Either way, if the Flames finish in the bottom 4, I just hope they pick from the 4, including Jones or Drouin. 2 possible elite centers, 1 possible elite winger/center (I believe this is actually Drouin's first year NOT playing center) and an elite defencemen... this team just needs to get elite prospects, period.

I will lose confidence if they go off the board and take Shinkaruk, and to a lesser degree, Monahan or Lindholm.

Hypothetically, say the Flames end up having the first two over-all picks (lottery, trading up, whatever) - do you pick someone like Jones and MacKinnon/Barkov? Do you go for the MacKinnon/Drouin 'proven chemistry' combo? Do you go for the best 2 centers in the draft for depth? Would be an interesting predicament.

Indeed. The top 4 is obvious, and if we're picking there, anything but those 4 would be a failure.

People need to watch Barkov and then say he is slow. He isn't slow at all.

He is no where near MacKinnon or Duchene, but he isn't going to fail in the NHL because he isn't fast enough. Such a dumb point that people keep ragging on him for. Not that I'm pointing fingers at anyone specifically since I have seen it said by multiple people.

Also, he won't bail for the KHL, lololololol.

I'd rather have MacKinnon over him too though.

If the Flames have the opportunity to get Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm, or Nishushkin and go for Shinkaruk instead I'll have to consider stop being a Flames fan, seriously because that would be a terrible choice.
