Also, I realize that city populations can be misleading (Utica is under 70,000) but the whole county it is in only had a population of under 250,000.

Is it just me or is that scoreboard hanging crooked?

Fair point, but Hershey's AHL franchise has been around since 1938, it's very established and thus I would agree with you that it's big league team doesn't really matter at this point. I wouldn't complain if they wanted to establish an outfit in Cleveland or Houston those are huge Metro areas. I'm just saying that if they want to establish an affiliate in a (relatively) small city it might as well be one close and with a few people who care about the big league team. I'm sick of having our AHL team move all the time St John-Omaha-Quad City-Abbotsford in 10 years. Also in 2004 we didn't even have an official affiliate we had to share some random team, might have cost us a Cup...

Yup. Flying from Albany to Calgary is pretty easy -- frequent flights to Montreal, Toronto, and Minneapolis.

Some more fuel to fire this rumor....
The St. Louis Blues have pulled their farm team out of Peoria starting next season and the rumored destination is:
Jeremy Rutherford @jprutherford 1m RT @j_clem: @jprutherford where will the Blues AHL affiliate play? ...It's expected the Chicago Wolves will house Blues' AHL team/prospects
Meaning the Canucks will be moving their affiliate and the Blues may sell their AHL franchise to the Canucks

The Canucks need to buy an AHL team first.

Right and if the Blues are closing shop in Peoria and moving to Chicago.. do they need their franchise anymore?

Thanks for the additional info. I am hoping this turns out to be true and the team moves, even if its not Utica, as long as it's out east.
Maybe they can move em to Calgary for a year so they can host 2 AHL teams next year.

The Saint John's Flames were 3 time zones away in the Maritimes and won a Calder Cup.

What happens to Heat season ticket holders? Become Canucks AHL tickets instead?

I imagine Abbotsford will give options to season ticket holders to hold on to their tickets or get a refund.
In the short term Abbotsford will gain more season ticket holders then lose

It would seem to be a better market than Utica... although perhaps there are reasons why St.Louis is pulling out.

I don't think the Utica arena even holds 5,000. Just checked it seems it can only hold 4,000 so I don't see that being viable.

I would imagine St. Louis is pulling out to save money. Chicago is an independently owned team, so they just have to supply a few players and that's all the cost they'll have.

I was in a way surprised that Abbotsford wasn't last on the average attendance - being that they are in Canucks land and all. I agree that Peoria would probably be a better destination at the moment, but I guess it will have a lot to do with what kind of contract the Heat are able to sign.
Feel bad for you PMM... looks like the move is becoming more likely.

We also don't know what incentives the investment group in Utica is offering the Flames.
It is easy to say that such and such city will be a great hockey market for an AHL team, but I think the Flames are more concerned with limiting the financial risk of running an AHL team rather than really building a long lasting AHL franchise. If the group in Utica is taking most of the financial burden, then I think the Flames will choose them over another city.
