So on the defense, we might lose Babchuk, Sarich(how long is his contract still?), possibly Bouwmeester via trades, so Flames will have Wideman, Brodie, Giordano, then Butler, Smith can fight off the #4 D with Dekeyser if they are really interested. I don't see any defenseman from Abby that will be shoo-in to move to the NHL. Of course, we have the NCAA guys like John Ramage who I wish will be in the Flames lineup next season.
Kind of weird that he had face to face meetings with GM's when it seems like Detroit was the slam dunk choice. No?

No harm in exploring all your options before signing. I don't fully know what the new CBA has with regards to rookie contracts and bonus incentives, but maybe a team will give him some crazy bonus money targets that's too enticing to pass up.
That is pretty significant... Steve Yzerman was DeKeyser's favorite player and has acquired some of the more sought after in NCAA free agents in recent years

Otherwise, for Feaster and Hartley to take off on some wild goose chase for someone they have little to no chance at, the day before a game for the coach and during the busy trade season for the GM, seems not much more then the "see we tried, nothing more we can do" approach, or, just as escape for both guys to work on their resume's together, just in case.
He has been to previous Detroit development camps, his favourite team growing up in Michigan was the Red Wings. Apparently Red Wings management and players reguarly meet and watch his games in college.

Flames have the same arguement for Dekeyser that the Oilers had for Shultz last year...

No they were saying Hanowski is teammates and friends with LeBlanc, the top scorer for St. Cloud, and Angostino plays with Laganiere, another NCAA free agent.
