It is weird that you'd give a list of teams and then reject one of those teams in the end though.

This move could also put Calgary in the running for the most sought after college free agent forward Antoine Laganiere who just so happens to be Agostino's teammate at Yale.
He also fits our needs for a big center (6'4'') that is in his early 20's and close to NHL ready.

Friday April 19 when Pit plays in Boston could be interesting.
Wonder what Wisebrod thinks now that all of his Bruins connections are likely choked, and the players he wanted, they're not getting. And the hockey world knows what they'd dangled out there.

Captin's post from earlier is starting to ring true from the info we are being given (extreme grain of salt considering what happened earlier). Iggy made the decision and it was the decision that was far better for him than it was for the franchise. Selfish but who can blame him? This organization has been a train wreck for so long and he has stuck it out, never asking for a trade, always doing what was best for the team. Honestly as much as I want to be a little upset that he potentially cost us a better deal, he's earned it and I'm proud of him for going for the cup. Nobody can deny that Iggy should lift the cup. He's given us everything and on the other hand I'm happy to see him worry about Iggy for once.
Ugh this whole situation makes me sick to my stomach. I'm starting to think we got royally fleeced but it will be one of those situations we won't really know how well or poorly we made out for many years to come.
Not enough vodka in the city to drink away what happened tonight.

Wow. While I'm really happy for Jarome that he's gonna get to play with Crosby and get his cup... we could have been way better off with LA/Boston... now we're left with this mess.

Probably his agent's idea... and a smart one too.
Give a list of places you would consider and then have final say on the final destination after sober discussion with family and others

This is the general sentiment on the Pens board:
Quote:
To me, Shero wasn't even going for the jugular on this one. He couldn't have expected to get Iginla with that offer.
Feaster must be the worst GM in recent memory. He was out-negotiated by his own player. He could have gotten almost as much for Iginla's negotiating rights after the season.

shero basically threw out an offer that he thought - hey if they take this that would be insane....and somehow it worked out. the offer that the flames reportedly agreed to with boston was much better than this

Yeah, we got fleeced. But whatever, we weren't going anywhere no matter how this trade went down. This trade gives Iggy the best chance, and no matter how good the picks, or talent we get... this management group tends to ruin them all anyway.

I wonder if Feaster even inquired about Maatta or if they just focused on their NCAA players.

That, and I am guessing Iginla wanted to make sure the deals were relatively equal for the return the Flames were getting, after the teams on his list had presented offers
He wasn't going to go to Pit for a 3rd round pick and one of those players if Boston was asking for 2 prospects plus a conditional(?) 1st round pick.
But, once those deals look equal, I am sure the desire to play in Pitt made it a no brainer, without hurting the Flames either.

Really happy with this trade, Iginla's best chance to win a cup. Looking forward to cheering on the Pens in the playoffs.

They took what they could get.
They probably had one significant prospect to trade, joe morrow, and offered similar or the same packages to Calgary and Dallas. Calgary did not bite and Dallas did.
Once Pittsburgh got their depth on d and morrow, they probably dangled the first again knowing it was the preferred destination.

To those who have experienced it, no explanation is necessary. To those who have not, no explanation is possible.

Jeez, not really what I wanted to read before going to sleep. I gotta say, I'm a little choked if Iggy gave a list of teams to negotiate with, but still wanted the final call.
I would've been pretty happy with Morrow + 1st though....I guess we just waited too long.

Kept my mouth shut until now and glad I did. Lots of emotion tonight, and I don't want to be one of those guys who use this forum to vent.
Those who are bitter about not getting one of Maata, Harrington or Pouliot are not being very realistic IMO. If Iginla had another year on his contract, then maybe yes, but as a rental player for a few months I wasn't expected the tippity top of prospects in return. I think some people were expecting Seguin or Bennet back (lol!)
We don't really know what the Boston offer was, only what Ward/TSN reported it was, so it's hard to compare. If the pick from Boston was indeed a conditional first, then I like the Pittsburgh deal better (pretty much) regardless of the players involved.
Angry posters are using the fact that Agostino and Hanowski were drafted in the 3rd and 5th rounds. It doesn't matter. What matters is what these players have become today.
I'm sure the Flames management know who they're getting but I'll admit I have no friggin' clue so it's not really fair for me to judge the merits of this deal by these players. I like that these are unsigned NCAA prospects as the Flames still have flexibility under the 50-contract limit, and I expect that was an important part of the deal from Feaster and Wiesbrod's point of view because other deals are easier to do now if signed players are coming back.
The first round pick is key as it will have the best chance of being the best player in the return. For those poster saying the return Dallas got for Morrow was better, don't forget that Dallas downgraded their pick. Joe Morrow was a former first-rounder at #23 overall, and it could work out the Flames pick around the same spot with the first rounder in this deal.
Don't know how I feel about Feaster. He has what must be one of the toughest GM job in the league trying to swing around a franchise heading in the wrong direction. Dealing Iginla today is part of cleaning up the mess D. Sutter left, so credit to him for doing the hard thing. I guess it will take a few years before we know how this turns out. Glad he has more patience than a good chunk of the fan base, because there are no quick fixes here.
And finally: Go get that frikkin' cup, Iggy! Wish you could have done it here but it wasn't meant to be. And if you do win it all and want to return home I'll welcome you back with open arms.

I went over to that board fully prepared to give them my congratulations and let them know that the Flames nation was fully behind them to win the cup this year......then I realized half of them don't even know how to spell Jarome correctly. Until they sort that nonsense out they don't have my blessing.

As far as Morrow goes a lot of interesting things are coming out about him since the trade. Things like him not being happy with coaches telling him to change his style of play to be more effective. I suspect he's dropped significantly in the Pittsburgh management's opinions since he was drafted, and with their glut of puck-moving defensemen they felt he was expendable.
As far as Maata goes, the fact Calgary passed on him twice (?) tells me they weren't very high on him.
Still not overly excited about this package. I think Khokhlachev will end up being the best player of any of them unless we get a gem with that late 1st, but ultimately Iggy ran the show on this one.
