26th-15th: Teams that lose in the first 2 rounds ranked in reverse standings order.
So if Pittsburgh finishes top 2 or 3 in the league, the absolute earliest the pick could be is in the 24-25 range assuming they lose in the first 2 rounds. If they win the President's Trophy the earliest they can draft is 26th which is what happened to the Canucks last year.
|
Which makes it a super easy decision to cheer for Iginla. The difference between 26th and 30th is inconsequential when it comes to him hoisting the Cup. I suppose if we get a lot of first round picks we hope the Devil's decide to give up theirs (as penalty for Kovalchuk) as essentially all of the picks move up.

Wiesbrod screwed up the Tracy Mcgrady trade when he was the GM of the Orlando Magic. I wonder if he is the one convincing everyone to settle for less when trading star players.

I deliver for the Herald and they told us that the papers are going to be very late due to them changing the headline from Boston to Pittsburgh. What a blunder by the media.

Unlikely...1030 am presser...5 hour flight to Pittsburgh...plus the time change...that would be cutting it super close unless a private jet was waiting for him.

I found this post on a Vancouver Canucks board. I thought it was very interesting.
"I don't think his value dropped. First, I think some over valued him as a rental. Second, he controlled where he wanted to go.
From my sources, and yes, he knows Iginla personally, but no he doesn't know the whole story:
The deal Feaster favoured was the Boston deal. The first was not going to be conditional, it was the two players named plus a first. The LA deal involved Bernier, a first and something else which the Flames liked but Iginla said no to LA. His thoughts were if he was moving as a rental, because none of the teams were prepared to talk extension, then he wanted to go where he felt the best chance of a cup was going to be. He also had conversations with Crosby and two other players on the Pens, don't know who. After the Morrow deal he was uncertain if the Pens would get back into the picture as their previous offer to Feaster had been turned down.
So the confusion, if there ever was any was simple. Feaster presented the offers and told Iginla the Flames preferred the Boston offer. Iginla left the arena and went home to discuss with his agent and family. Once the Boston game was over the Bruins wanted to consummate the deal. Iginla said he was still thinking it over. Feaster tried to persuade Iginla to take the Boston deal, it was the better of the two deals on the table, Iginla had already said no to LA so there were two teams standing. Iginla was torn but he wanted the Pens. Once the Pens made their final offer Iginla knew that it was still possible. After the Morrow trade he wasn't sure anymore if a deal to the Pens was in the cards but the Pens stepped up. Iginla decided for himself that he wanted to play with Crosby and the Pens. At that point he was no longer prepared to waive to go anywhere else. Feaster's hands were tied. He could pull the deal and get nothing or take the best that he could get.
By the way, the Pens were said to have offered more before they pulled the trigger for Morrow but Feaster told them it wasn't enough. Iginla all along said his first choice was the Pens so once they stepped up his decision was really simple.
This is the exact situation we face with Luongo. If MG gets an offer he likes but one of the Florida teams steps up with an offer then Luongo could do the exact same thing, take the one where he prefers to play.
So value is relative to the player who holds the NTC/NMC. I really don't think Feaster had any other options, other than to refuse to trade Iginla. So he got something rather than nothing.
In his press conference Feaster said that he and Iginla had already talked about an extension and that Feaster told him it wasn't in the plans. So Iginla knew he was done in Calgary. All along, if he moved, he wanted to go to Pittsburg. If that wasn't possible then he gave a short list of other teams he would CONSIDER.
I think the Pens played this perfectly. They knew where Iginla preferred to play but at the same time they did offer up two prospects and a 1st for a rental player."
The only HW the Canucks need

Kind of like that other trade they were vilified for a year and a half ago. Blue-chip, guaranteed D-man all-star (Erixon) for some scrub who will never make an NHL team (Horak), a useless late 2nd round pick who was arguably one of the best D at the WJC's (Wotherspoon), and some blue-chipper's, less talented brother, who was only the 3rd highest scorer at the WJC's (Granlund). Knee jerk reactions are great.

McKenzie confirms that Feaster would have preferred the Boston deal but Iggy choose the Pens
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 11s Doesn't matter now, but CGY preferred deal was with BOS. The 2 teams agreed on components but w/o critical 3rd element - player approval.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 15s Bottom line, as was the case with Brenden Morrow, Jarome Iginla is a Pittsburgh Penguin today because PIT is where he wanted to go.

has nothing to do with it has to do with the return.
These prospects are ranked #10 and 12th on the Pens own depth chart for prospects.
People don't seem to get that.
PIT is mainly deep in D men prospects and these 2 forwards are projected maybe 3 line NHL players. Agostino 2nd in best case but not probable.
Hey its all about intellectual honesty, bullocks.

I'm not happy with the return but Iggy 100% deserved the final say. Like what was said in that post by Shin Pad, better get something for him then nothing.

Makes sense, Boston made the better offer.
I wonder what the pens offered before they dealt for morrow.
J. Morrow and the 2013 first rounder?
