I enjoy watching Iginla play for the Calgary Flames. If he's leaving as a free agent, then I understand that we need to see if we can get some quality assets back, but if we can't, I'd rather that we keep him for now. The opportunity to see Iginla wear the flaming C for another month is worth more to me than a few late round picks and junk prospects.

I just can't get this line of thinking...you've seen Iginla for years, you know HE wants a shot at the cup and our prospect cupboard is bare.
But forget all that you want to see him play for a couple more home games.
That about right?

Any Iginla trade will need the approval of Feaster, Weisbrod, King, Edwards, maybe a couple other people. I know it's tempting to scapegoat, but whatever happens with Iginla will be on the whole Flames executive. If they mess it up, it's all of them messing it up. The fact they waited until now to try to move Iginla is already a big fail on the part of the organization, not just Feaster. Not even mainly Feaster.

Do you honestly believe Feaster has been in control over when, how, and to whom Iginla gets moved? Like he could have walked into King's office two years ago and said "guess what - I just traded Iginla."

I'm not sure if this has been posted or not, I scanned through and didn't see it, but Iginla's post game interview said a lot when he said something to the effect of, in five or six days there will be a different group of guys here. Almost as if he knows there is going to be wholesale changes.

The only reason the team is considering this is as a way to kick-start a rebuild, and if they can't get the pieces to do it, then what would be the point?
Yes, he may leave as a free agent, and that is unfortunate. Yes, the team is heading into uncharted lottery-pick territory, and could be terrible for a long time. If the return is indeed lower than what is being reported, then trading Iginla does not really make much difference one way or the other. But is all of this really worth the anger and consternation? Get a grip people. It's a game.

This team is far too asset poor to let sentimentality impair the management of those assets. We're four years into what's shaping into a long, long playoff drought. Our enduring delusion about being 'in the mix' has made us the laughing stock of the league. The only teams as bad as the Flames have substantially better asset pools. This is going to be as grim a ride as a Flames fan as the Young Guns era. And given we're a cap payroll team, I don't expect fans to be as forgiving this time around. But I doubt they'll be mad; they'll just be indifferent.

It depends on what's going on behind the scenes. If Iginla is still open to the possibility of re-signing in Calgary and would prefer not to be traded and we're not getting a good return for him, I'm going to enjoy the next month of seeing him as a Flame, and then we'll see how things play out in the summer. If he's requested a trade, then I'd do what I can to move him to a contender.
He's willing to waive his NTC, so he's obviously willing to be traded, but there's a big difference between him telling management to do what they feel they need to do and him telling management that he doesn't want to finish the season in Calgary.

I really hope that people on this site get ready for all the outcomes possible. I'd love a massive return that sets up the Flames for a decade, I really would.
But I'm also preparing for two other scenarios
1) he walks for nothing
and because of that
2) a trade where they don't do as well as I'd like but it's greater that 1)
I think that's the perspective that's needed in all this, or this site will come apart at the seems by Wednesday.

We won't get an impact player like Iginla this time ... you have to settle for a bit less. A good prospect (who f.e. can play 2nd line in the future), a project and a late 1st would be fine for me. If the Bruins give up something like Spooner, Grzelcyk and their 1st, I'd be all over it.
|
I agree, you can't really compare the Nieuwendyk situation to the Iginla situation and Nieuwendyk was a lot younger and not going as a rental.
Eric. D. nails the rest of it though. Typically, deals for rentals yield very little return after all is said and done.

Why did the trade talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vancouver Canucks over the rights to Roberto Luongo go off the rails? Largely because of Vancouver’s insistence that Nazem Kadri should be included in the deal and Toronto’s unwillingness to part with a player they believed had a significant upside. In the end, they were both right – the Canucks for trying to pry Kadri away, the Leafs for refusing to meet their asking price.
But it illustrates a potential stumbling block in these types of negotiations. They can end in a stalemate if the two sides get stubborn and dig in. If the Flames can’t get a Kadri in any Iginla deal and are only offered a collection of Angelo Espositos, what do they do then? It’s a tough call.

I know some people say that anything is better than nothing, but I don't necessarily agree. If you are fairly certain that the "anything" is going to amount to nothing anyway, then it just doesn't matter. You might as well stick to your guns and not get pushed over - the long term implications are worse if you do. Every GM in the league will just hold out waiting for you to cave in the future if they know you give in easily.

My money is on nothing happening with Iginla, secondary assets moved for fringe picks & prospects. Iginla signs an extension soon after the deadline & the Flames coast to a #9 overall pick. Lather rinse repeat next year with an injection of youth & a new GM.

I do not envy you Bingo, or any of the mods over the next coming days regardless if we buy, sell, or stand pat. Each action will have a segment of people bringing out the pitchforks. I know I will be going silent in terms of posting on here for at least a few hours after things are concluded just to not get in the way while you are all dealing with the onslaught.

IMO option 1 is a complete disaster for the organization. If the minute hand is nearing 12 and no deal is done I would rather a late first round pick on it's own than option 1. We all knew that the team was never going to get the best value for Iginla waiting until he was 35 to trade him so it really shouldn't surprise fans if the return is not a homerun however you have to get something in hopes it helps the future and even if it's only a 1st round pick there's possibility of turning that into a future contributor for the organization.

It had better at least be 2 if it has to be because 1 would be a complete failure for this team.

Id be very dissapointed if Iginla isnt moved even as a rental. Getting a prospect like Morrow and if if only a 2nd round pick is much more benefical to the Flames going forward.
I am tired of management being unwilling to make the hard decisions.

I'm cautiously waiting to see what happens. At this poing, the team might not trade anyone or they might want to trade someone and that player might just refuse to go to another team. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if we had the same team next year

yep, either scenario is quite likely....
However if its option #1, some member of the Flames Management should be accountable with this massive mistake...
Odd part is option 1 could be very likely as I could see Flames asking for a step price and unwilling to change their request and simply run out of time on trade deadline day........

Agree 100%
Unless Iginla was certainly planning on walking away for nothing in the off-season it is better to hang onto him than trade him for Angelo Espositos & 29th overall picks.

I know that Esposito is an easy target to go after when talking about deadline deals but Alex Plante was drafted 1 spot after Shattenkirk. It isn't crazy to think that those two could have swapped spots and the Oilers end up with Shattenkirk for Smyth which would have been a great deal.
If people aren't willing to trade Iginla and others because late 1st's and 2nd rounders will just get wasted by this management group it is probably time to can the management right now.
Plenty of valuable guys have come from those picks and the chance of getting someone from those picks is more valuable than keeping old pieces that have shown they are not leading this team to the Cup in the next 5 years.
