Family or hockey..... shouldnt be a tough decision.
Cervenka must be a horrible parent then by this logic. He left his wife and his new-born child in Czech Republic to come to Calgary.

NHL.com now has a report about it online too: www.nhl.com/ice/blogpost.htm?id=15731

I have no issue with this. They can trade him and buyer beware. If true, he is being up front about it. Not the first time a player would not want to report to a team.

He's made his family upwards of 50 million dollars, I think they'll be okay.

People in all fields have to do this. I am sure he can hire a nanny and a maid to help. Hell he probably already has for when he is on the road.

He could just hire substitute parents and take his wife to the new city with him.

Kipper is a different dude, this shouldn't be a surprise at all. Honestly, I'm surprised he didn't just stay in Finland a few years ago.

You know there are still some fan boys on here who think we can still make it. As for Kipper having a baby, is that anyone's issue other than his? He knew he could be traded at any given time so he's adult enough to think about things ahead of time. The odds are he is probably going to call it a career at the end of the year anyway (which would probably make more teams want him). If he's under contract and is traded and doesn't report to the other team, that's nothing more than quitter. Now is the time the Flames need him the most, he would do more good for this team if he played on another team and for him to just turn his back on this team is just dishonest. If it's true, I don't know how anyone could still think positive of him.

If it were any other player than Kipper, I would be upset.

Fact is, he's carried this team for close to a decade.

He could really make one more gigantic save for this franchise by accepting a trade and reporting, but, I don't have massive ill-will if he doesn't.

From that perspective, enjoy retirement Miikka, you earned it.

Wow.

Reading this thread and I am embarassed that through CP I am even remotely associated to some of the posters in here. Reflects poorly on the fanbase and the city. For some reason, Thunder Bay ends up looking like a dump as well.

If he was being up front about it, he would have told them this at the start of the year, not a week before trade deadline. Kipper did not just wake up 2 weeks ago and decided to have a kid, he has known for 9 months.

No it's not off topic. You make it sound like Kipper is the first athlete to father a child during the season, and it simply isn't the case. It's not like he's leaving forever. Is he being irresponsible by going on the next road trip?

Dont be absurd. Parenting when you have tens of millions of dollars in the bank is not the same thing as parenting like a normal person. He can drop 30 bucks an hour on a night nurse and he and his wife will sleep soundly through till morning.

"Irresponsible"... Are you high?

For the record, if he doesn't want to go anywhere, that's fine. He's well within his rights as a free thinking human to do that. Going or not going doesnt impact how responsible a parent he is.

Tough crowd in here. It's good to see that Kipper cares about his family and it's obvious that he enjoys his life here in Calgary. Just because of this people are going to throw him under the bus and forget everything that he has done for us? It's just as bad as Flash Walken trying to explain how Morrow is better than Iggy. I'm not 100% happy about this either but seriously, respect the man's wishes. He's earned the right to decide what he wants. Same goes for Iggy.

LOL... To clear this up and I'm done with this topic.
I get that people do it all the time in all fields. My issue with it is the age of his new son. I have no issue with if the child is a bit older. Money doesn't solve everything. his "50 million" and a nanny do not replace the kids father him.

The thing is, regardless of how much money you make its never enough, simply because you and your dependants get accustomed to a certain life style.

I bad decision he would make as a parent is not vying to make more money.

I can only speak for myself, but I will NEVER forget what Kipper has done for this team. He is, as I said, my favourite Flame ever. But that doesn't mean that I have to agree with this decision.

As long as he was getting paid, the canadians could do whatever they wanted and they wouldn't have violated the CONTRACT between the player and the team. If Kipper refuses to play for anyone elese even though his contract says he should, he's in violation.
There's nothing in Kiprusoff's contract forcing him to play or compelling him to not retire mid season. It's the player's option whether or not to show up each day and as long as he's willing to not be paid, he can retire at any moment while fulfilling the terms of his deal.

The kid sleeps 18 hours a day, eats, and poops. Who's missing out on what here?
