Good for him, if true.
Not surprising, he's content with the money he's made, and the way he seems wired. I remember buddies saying that they partied with him way back when 8 years ago, and he was as humble as they could come, couldn't believe the money he was making, loved the city and the people, and would be here as long as they wanted him.

He was likely gone at the end of this year or next, and if Iginla and others that he likes on the the team leave (another consideration whe talking about why players like it here or consider playing here that factors in if they ship off #12), and things are different, he may just decide to move on early.

And really, whats the return going to be for a backup? Top teams that may need a backup goalie aren't going to pay, only can hope for a injury to an Emery or Fleury for his value to increase any significant amount in the next week.

Best goalie we'll probably ever have. 34 to the rafters, and not some stupid "Forever a Flame" crap. Legit retirement.

It work especially well for them next year as his actual money is much less than cap hit.

I hope this is true just so all the Toronto media (and other media for that matter), get angry and pissed off.

Not a fan of this if true and wouldn't mind telling him not to bother showing up if that is what he actually said.

But just rumours right now and at least it is a quit if somewhere else and not a quit if not place X.

Exactly, the return was going to be insignificant anyways, better to have him retire a Flame. It's not like Iginla, where we are expecting a significant return.

Flames knew the deal when they signed him to that front loaded contract. Most people were expecting him to retire by the time he hits the last year of his contract. Not sure why some people are angry with him. He did the Flames a favour by signing the contract front loaded. So now he's just expecting the organization to return the favour to him. I think it's fair.

As I stated in the other thread, I'd be extremely disappointed if true. I get that family is important and everything, but hey - you can't just decide to "extend" your expired NTC like that. And I get that the return wouldn't have been huge, and it's not like I even wanted him to get traded for sure ... but at least the Flames should have the ability to do it if they want to. Without an NTC, a player shouldn't be allowed to make a decision like that.

I've always been a huge fan of Kipper (my favourite Flame ever, even ahead of Iggy), but if true (and it's Kypreos, so I give Kipper the benefit of the doubt here), that decision would seriously piss me off.

So a person shouldn't be free to retire?

Kipper just had a baby, and in true goalie fashion, just does what he does.
I don't know what he might have earned coming back anyway.
Perhaps he becomes a huge mentor for his forthcoming padawan - Ramo.
This could turn out well, plus isn't a bit refreshing to see someone want to stay in Calgary???

Then retire.

He isn't retiring he is trying to control what the team does with him and without a NMC he doesn't have that right.

I would have more respect for him if he just retired than pulled this (alleged) crap.

Agreed, He signed his contract knowing full well he could be traded in the last 2 years,I would trade him to the Islanders for a 7th rounder if true.

Of course he should. But a player shouldn't be free to handcuff his team by threatening to not report to another team, that's all I'm saying. Unless you have an NTC/NMC.

I don't think he has the freedom to do what he wants, he's under contract. I would tell him he was traded and if he says no, I would tell him to leave. He, like Iggy, shouldn't be on this team any longer. This team is going no where but down in the standings and the Flames should be able to load up on any kind of asset they can to help the future. Sure, Kipper has given a lot to the Flames and so has Iggy but they have both been paid millions and millions of dollars to do so. They don't owe the Flames anything other than their contract states but the Flames don't owe either of them anything more than they've been paid.

If this is indeed true, Kipper shouldn't be honoured by the Flames at all.

Exactly. If Babchuk came out and just retired, people here would be singing a different tune. If Kipper decides he'd rather retire than go to another team, that's his right. Not sure why some people are getting all worked up about it.

If the reports are true, the Flames should immediately send him to the Heat. Then when he either gets claimed on waivers or clears and refuses to report to his new team he will be in violation of his contract and the Flames won't have to pay him. Not a huge deal, but at least they can save some dough on a goalie who would be clearly going through the motions at this point, why bother paying him.

I have to admit I am kind of torn, if this is indeed true. On one hand, having just had a baby and being (potentially) a few months away from retirement, I could see the guy not wanting to have to make a move now. But on the other hand, is having to live out of a hotel for 1-3 months and maybe only seeing your family and new baby a handful of times really a good enough reason to not honour the contract you signed..? I honestly am not sure, but I lean towards no.

I get wanting to be around a new kid as much as possible, but reality is the Flames are on the road more then they're at home for the rest of this season, I mean really we're probably talking about an extra 5-10 days (until the end of the regular season anyways) he would be away from home if traded.
