IMO that trade breaks the seal. It is a big one, so it needs full focus.
The other ones are a lot easier to make.
Plus you will have a better idea of your shopping list afterwards, depending on what Iggy fetches.

You can bet there will be a conditional pick if the team re-signs him.

Huh, they've been a disaster before during and after Nash, up until they fired Howson they were a disaster, you're letting their current streak sway you with an argument that is way to soon.
They're still not a good or especially skilled or deep team, they've gotten incredibly hot goaltending from Cowboy bob that covers up the fact that for the most part they are the worst offensive team in the NHL.
"Haven't looked back" Come on man, They're still a 11th place under .500 basement dwelling team like they've always been.

Some media livid..Jarome Iginla not talking after skate. Calgary media not all surprised. Outsiders are choked. Interesting development.
|
Take note, those fans who think the Calgary sports media are tough on the team. It's a lot worse in other NHL cities.

Normally I wouldn't like to use the term but the Iginla trade would be a major domino to fall before the Flames made other moves. Like Badger said what the return for Iggy is will dictate what trades the Flames will make after. If any at all.
Say they do (I know I know I know, they won't move him, but for conversation sake) get Hamilton out of Boston in an Iginla deal. Makes Bouwmeester being moved easier without leaving a gapping chasm on the blueline.

Pierre Lebrun's blog
The Bruins are believed to have made an offer on Brenden Morrow but lost out to the Penguins. The big fish remains Jarome Iginla, the Flames captain in play, with the likes of Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Los Angeles showing interest.
It’s believed the price for Iginla is a first-round pick plus two young assets, a hefty sum but one I believe the Bruins would be willing to pay for Iginla.

Honestly think we are asking for too much. This is most likely a rental with a compensation pick if he resigns. Maybe ask for top prospect or young nhl ready player with 1st round comp if he resigns. Not 1st round pick , top prospect and 2nd tier prospect...
Look at what Hossa+Dupuis got at the time.
Hossa was acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the trade deadline on February 26, 2008, along with Pascal Dupuis, in exchange for Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, prospect Angelo Esposito, and the Penguins' first-round pick in 2008 ( Daultan Leveille). [11]

I understand the reasoning for moving Iggy, but more and more, I feel like the hockey "brain trust," which is largely the media, is looking for a trade just because it would be exciting. It's like a hundred voices yelling at the Flames to do it just so they have something interesting to talk about for a few days. All these analysts that are writing about how the Flames "have" to move Iggy will be the same morons that write columns next year about how the Flames are doomed without Iggy. Ughh, so tired of the whole thing. I feel like the piper is playing and we're all the village's kids.

A late 1st round pick and two prospects is not asking for too much.
Olli Jokinen got a mid to late 1st round pick, a good young centre in Matthew Lombardi, and a good young heart and soul guy in Brandon Prust.
Jokinen can only dream of what Iggy can do in the playoffs.
Even Pierre Lebrun, a national media guy thinks that a 1st and two prospects is fair. The media in the Cities like LA, Chicago, and Boston are just trying to drive the value down for their beloved team. Don't buy into it.

6 or 7 months after his draft? He made Team Canada 10 months after the trade, after being cut the previous 2 years - certainly suggests he was still considered a top prospect at that time

So:
A) The media in those cities feel it's their job to help out their local team.
and
B) Flames management are going to let their decision be influenced by trade rumours on twitter and hockey forums.
Do you really believe that?

If you're looking for precedent on what a rental brings back, why go back that far, look at what Brendan Morrow brought back just two days ago. That makes more sense.
If Morrow brings back a good top tier prospect (no not blue chip) then Iginla is worth two and a 1st rounder. Easy.

I'm not too worried about the Flames pricing themselves out of an Iginla trade. It's simple, ask for as much as you can get and see if someone will pay it.
There is a week until the trade deadline, if no one bites on the high price you have plenty of time to lower it and get a deal done. There is no way that any of the teams in the running snub you and say no if you ask for too much and then come back with a lower offer closer to the deadline.

To be fair, Esposito had plummeted during the draft. TSN had him 8th and he went 20th but he was the player that kept dropping so there's a chance most teams didn't like what they saw.
He wasn't junk at the time though, thats for sure. Falling maybe.
