Erin Patria Margaret Pizzey (née Carney, born 19 February 1939) is a English family care activist and a best-selling novelist. She became internationally famous for having started one of the first [2] women's refuges (called women's shelters in the U.S.) in the modern world, Chiswick Women's Aid, in 1971, [3] the organisation known today as Refuge. [1] Pizzey has been the subject of death threats and boycotts because of her statement that most domestic violence is reciprocal, and that women are equally as capable of violence as men.
My views are similar to this woman. Who puts the needs of everyone above one gender.
|
My mum ran a refuge in London in the 70's, partly as a result of reading Pizzeys book, she ended up dispising Pizzey as her refuge was dirty and badly run and so women would end up leaving, often to return to their husbands while Pizzey seemed to care mostly about getting press and lording it over every other refuge in London.
Takes me back though, I grew up around the refuge and often came home from school to find a family staying with us as the husband had found out where the refuge was, its why I am a foster parent really, my mum taught me you have to get involved.

The photographer and TIME just released a video essay and update:

Warning: It's not easy to watch, but it is a riveting short documentary.

Jeebus, that video. You can see the spark of life in her eyes, die out a little more, every day.
Does anyone know what the sign says, that she held up at the end?

Looks pretty fake to me. I assume it's a commercial or something? Still a pretty powerful message either way.

Jesus Christ (I know I know, but its a term that fits here) how can a video depress the hell out of you, and get you so angry so quickly.
No one deserves that type of treatment, nobody.
That poor woman is going to be damaged for the rest of her life, but I admire the courage of making that video when so many people try to hide the fact that they're being abused.
She's incredibly brave.

"help me, I don't know if there will be a tomorrow for me"
Its more then likely a awareness campaign from poking around on the net, but if it is its incredibly effective.

These things have the opposite effect on me. I watched the video and thought 'how dumb do you have to be to stick around if somebody is kicking the ##### out of you on a daily basis?' I try to be sensitive to this kind of thing, but at the end of the day it's ######ed to be attracted to - and stick around with - some alpha male ape who uses your face as a punching bag.

Not to be insulting, but I think you need to understand how controlling and how good at emotionally imprisoning their victims these abusers are.
They're usually not the brutal, wife beater wearing half bald hair backed monsters that we see on T.V.
They're usually charming and good looking and you would never be able to pick them out of the lineup. But they understand how control works. They establish it a little at a time, they take away the things that would make you able to run to freedom.
They hit and apologize and cry and promise that it will never happen again, then the next time its more brutal and followed by threats.
A lot of these abused woman are completely controlled and cowed and scared to leave, its the exceptionally brave ones that do, the rest we rarely find out about.
I have incredible sympathy for abused woamn, and everything should be done to find a way to educate them that they can leave, and they can seperate and most importantly they can find protection from these monsters.

Luckily for me I've never been around this type of abuse (that I know of). I can't figure out either side of the equation. Maybe if I knew people in one of these situations it would be different, but in that photo essay for example, the guy looked exactly like the type of guy that would beat his woman. He doesn't seem charming or charismatic...he seems like an ape.

Maybe, but he filled the needs that she was looking for. She liked a bit of bad boy, he filled that, he worked at getting at her through her kid which is what a lot of them do. And once he was in her life, he started setting what are called easy to break rules so that he could start establishing his control.
Who knows what would have happened if the camera person wasn't there, she might have accepted the corrections and the beatings, but having another person in the room probably emboldened her.

Statistically most abused women grow up in houses with abusive fathers, this normalises violence even, in some cases makes women see it as part of love, their is also an adrenaline rush to the chaos of it all that some women are drawn to, you see this in criminal and junkie behaviour as well, it becomes a bit of an addictive cycle.
Typically an abusive boyfriend/husband will find ways to isolate their partner, moving them away from where they grew up, getting into fights with parents and friends so that no one wants to be around him (and therefore not around the wife either).
By the time the abuse gets to a really high level the woman is cut off from support and generally has no where to go.

This is a campaign. For the record, it's not real but still conveys a powerful and important message.
I didn't think the major wounds looked real so I looked into it.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion. I watched it at 1080p and it sure looked like makeup to me. But it's still pretty powerful and hopefully will have some positive effect.
