Johnson weighs in:
Boston the most likely destination for Iginla
Quote:
...Morrow netted a prospect, defenceman Joe Morrow, and a swap of picks from Dallas. Would a bit more than that be enough to entice the Flames and satisfy yowling fans hereabouts?
The very fact the Bruins were also heavily involved in the Morrow bidding further indicates that, for the moment at least, Calgary’s demands — a pick and a prospect? a pick, a prospect and a player off the roster? — might be slightly out of whack with reality.
So with the trade deadline bearing down on us, of the three remaining destinations on Iginla’s reported list, Boston shapes up as the most likely.
But, as hard as it might be to believe given the whirling tempest of speculation, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll wind up there, or anywhere else, by April 3rd.
We may still find ourselves asking the Will-He-Stay-or-Will-He-Go? question as late as late June.
|
He convincingly explains why Pittsburgh isn't likely at all (why break up the best line in hockey, or move Neal off Malkin's wing?), why Chicago isn't either (would Iginla want to move to left wing?), and why LA won't overpay (they don't need to).
I'm guessing 50% Iginla doesn't get moved, 40% he gets moved for far less than fans expect (and Feaster is burned in effigy), 10% the Flames get their 1st, one high-end prospect, and one second-tier prospect.

The thing about the 4 teams on "The List" is none of them need Iginla, he's a want. So I think this will go right down to the wire as they try and wear the Flames down into accepting a lower offer than what is being reported as required for a trade. I expect Iginla won't get traded (if he does) until April 1st or 2nd the earliest.

Oh man, I am going to blubber like a small child when this does eventually go down.
Naheed Nenshi @nenshi 24 Mar
Can't disagree. RT @FlamesNation: Yeah, @nenshi might be our mayor, but Calgary belongs to Iginla

Then of course in an interview after the Toronto Boston game last night Bergeron openly says, that the Bruins are having a tough time finding the back of the net. The chances are there but they are not converting enough.
You think not the Bruins have a big interest in acquiring goal scorer like Iggy.

I really hope that the Flames can convince Iginla to add a couple of more teams to the list, because none of those 4 teams seems desperate enough to pay out the nose. Like you said, none of them "need" Iginla... they are all doing quite well as they are. That's not to say any of them wouldn't be happy with getting him, but why mortgage the future for it. It's not like any of those teams are looking at their shot this season.
Teams like Detroit, New Jersey, Ottawa, Toronto, NYR might have more initiative right now to make costly move for various reasons.

Bergeron openly volunteers a cliche you hear from only what, 90 percent of teams

I have been thinking the same thing that Johnson is pretty much trying to say, Boston is the only team that really needs Iggy and Feaster is not going to win a "trade match" against Chiarelli.
I say 98% chance Iggy gets moved and 99% chance its for less than flames fans think.
If they don't move him, they get nothing. Iggy is not putting his Stanley Cup dreams into the 2013 season only. Iggy is smart enough to realise no matter what the flames do, they will not be back in the playoffs next year or maybe even the year after. Hence why he never let his agent even negotiate a new contract with the flames.

Hey it's the number 1 center on the team answering a question to the fact they had over 70 shots in both games that were good scoring chances, blocked shots, or missed the net and really only have 2 goals scored in both games. If you watched both games the Bruins dominated the Maple Leafs and only came away with 2 out of a possible 4 points. I agree it is cliche but hey Lucic has scored 1 goal in 17 games and his cap hit is 6 Million next year, and 4 Million this year even when Iggy is struggling he's never experiencing those droughts. Meanwhile Pittsburgh just keeps winning.

Yeah, I think a couple of those teams - especially Toronto and NYR - might offer up more than the four on the list. At the very least, their 1st rounders will be higher.

Anyone else catch Maher in the morning? I just caught the end of it but he was saying Feaster didn't the trip with the Flames yesterday. Did I hear that right?

Not a big shock. Busy with the pro scouts here, and they're back for a game tomorrow night anyway. No biggie.

I never heard Maher, however it does not surprise me that Feaster is in Calgary... Key Flames Management decision makers, will all be in Calgary....

If you are the GM of one of these 3 teams (Pits already has made its move) and get knocked out in the first round without getting Iginla when you had a legit chance to win a SC you might be in line to be the next GM of the Flames.......
It looks extra bad if the Iginla sweeps winner goes deep in the playoffs instead of you.
ie looking for a job.

All 3 of those GM's jobs are safe, no matter what happens.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but how many of the big name rental trades actually work out for the team that gets the rental? It's hard to think of examples.

I don't know too much about the Pens prospects but who would the Flames want from the Pens out of these three defenseman in order?
Scott Harrington, Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maata?
Also, can we get one of those & a first round pick? Or would you prefer two of those and forego the first rounder?
I think I might prefer two of those as the 1st rounder would be in the 27-30 pick (most likely) as well with two of those prospects, they have either 1 or 2 years of development already

He said he hasn't "Said anything about a list". Doesn't mean he hasn't submitted one to management if they asked him to. He's basically saying he isn't the one who said that he gave a list to the media.
