Default Missing Dogs

Stories about missing dogs found dead or badly injured in the Sylvan Lake area has some fearing that the animals were stolen for dogfighting rings.
The Facebook page for the Sylvan Lake and Area Serenity Pet Shelter has received a number of posts about missing dogs.
Melanie Crehan, who runs the shelter, doesn’t believe the animals were attacked by wild animals. She thinks they’ve been taken for dog-fighting.
“The thought of what’s happening to those dogs is sickening. Keeps me awake lots of nights,” she said.
“I wish there could be an end to it. But we have very little hard information to go on because people seem to be fearful.”
Crehan is recommending that dog owners deadbolt their gates from the inside

What the ####??

Wow that's effing sick. I can't believe there are enough people that would enjoy watching animals savagely killing each other that there could actually be a demand for this. I'm pretty sure I don't hang out with anybody that wouldn't be disgusted by this type of thing.

Stealing family pets for dog fighting. There's a special place in hell for these kind of people...

Eye for an eye punishment is totally irrational I know, but the angry animal loving part of me wants these people caught and then forced to fight each other to their painful deaths.

Really? We're gonna take cat-lady equivalent for dogs at face value? She has no proof, only unfounded suspicions.

I don't think just any dog off the street can be used for dog fighting. From what I read about Mike Vick, it seems the dogs used are from a very selective group.

I think he used "normal" dogs as cannon fodder to encourage his "conditioned" dogs.

We live on an acreage at the end of a dead end road and always dead bolt our gate if we leave the dogs outside when we go to town. Common sense.

How does 'taken for dog fighting' become the likeliest explanation?

Is there a history of it in Sylvan that someone can point to?

From the story it sounds like that is the conclusion after review of the injuries in missing animals that have been found either dead or horribly injured.

Horrible story.

I would guess coyotes as a more likely explanation. How could one distinguish between a dog attached by a pack of coyotes versus being used for dog fighting? They could also just be getting in fights or attached by other dogs (not in a ring).

+1 for Coyotes as the possible explanation

If only because, according to the story, some live but injured dogs are turning up. With coyotes, that's a possibility. A dogfighting ring probably wouldn't be letting them go.

But you could also find out if an unusual number of missing dogs have disappeared from fenced yards, which would be a clue as to dognapping versus dogs being lured away by coyotes. My dogs have had many encounters with coyotes but their four acre fence keeps them confined and the coyotes never enter. If my dogs disappear, it's dognapping.

Dogs in the country that aren't confined and have a habit of chasing coyotes get away with it a few times but the coyote will eventually return with buddies lying in wait.

There is probably lots of information there to make an early guess about coyotes versus human predators.

My two cents.
