In an age where divorce is so readily available, people change their partners like they change their underwear. It seems that most don't give any serious thought about the person they are going to marry. We are so used to seeing marital affairs in the media that it doesn't affect us anymore when it really should.

I was going to make a post about how I like the comedian and his jokes, but then got sidetracked by something...

Wow! 10,000 people! 95% laughs! This guy must be the greatest comedian in the history of the world! He really should get a better agent.
I'm curious though -- where did you get that number? I know you didn't just pull it out of your ass because you thought it sounded impressive.

Actually, I'm not a minority. Just like our comedian, I'm a white male between the ages of 18 and 49. I happen to recognize the advantages I have because of it though. And I don't think two or three celebrity divorces involving cheating husbands represents of an "epidemic of gold digging whores".
I'd say pretty much anyone who believes that doesn't like women in general, and need an excuse to badmouth them. The golfer's bank account is apparently good enough to set them off.

Bill Burr's actually pretty funny, imo. He will likely be the next big comedian. He's got similar jokes to Louis CK, but with a bit more edge and "loud" delivery.
I laugh at all his jokes, and I laughed at this one, but it all depednds on how you react to comedy. For me, when I laugh at a comedian it's not because I agree with everything he's saying, it's because he said it in a funny way that made me laugh.
Like for example, if you asked me to seriously break down what he was saying about divorce and gold digging whores, my written response would be similar to your written response in this thread. Condemning him for being sexist and not understanding that it goes both ways and all that. But because it's a comedy routine, I just judge it based on his delivery and ability to make something seem funny. Louis CK is really good at it, and this guy seems to be good, too.

Fair enough. Like I said, I shut it off after a couple minutes. He might be a funny guy, but the whole "Angry White Man" shtick isn't really my bag.
It really wasn't presented as entertainment here though. We've been told not to ignore "the message" and the "social commentary".
We've even been told that 95% of people would agree with him. That of course would include 95% of all women too. 95% of women believe there is an "epidemic of gold digging whores".
Some people seem to take his act seriously.

Actually, I take back what I said. I just went back to where the video was posted and his exact post accompanying that video was...
Quote:
I'll leave this here, specifically because it addresses Tiger's divorce settlement. Many will probably be offended, but don't let that distract from the message

I fully agree that this comedians routine is a silly thing to use as a serious argument. But I also don't believe he fully believes in everything in his routine. He's likely similar to most comedians in that he wakes up in the morning and goes, "what can I say to make people laugh, today?"
Louis CK's the same way. If everything he's ever joked about was taken at face value, he'd be a monster who isn't fit to raise children. But that isn't the case.
I'll laugh at the crudest, most racist jokes you can imagine, as do most people I know, but if I was walking down the street and ecountered a hate crime against a minority, my stomach would sink and I'd probably intervene.
But I definitly didn't have a grasp on why the video was posted and what is was being used for it suggest in this thread, as I was just skimming through.

Yeah, I thought it was a pretty funny bit, and not anti-women at all. He goes on to talk about how all these guys are idiots and that he's not calling out all women, just the gold-diggers. The "great men" part was clearly tongue in cheek.
Still a stupid thing to use in this argument though.

Why should Tiger's divorce affect us?
Famous men have a long history of being unfaithful to their wives. This has no impact on my life or how I view marriage. And I don't think people get married without putting serious thought into it. I imagine most people still want to have a perfect marriage. At least now, when it doesn't work out, it's more acceptable to cut ties and move on.

Just out of curiosity... Do you not think the multi million dollar settlements women receive in some of these cases is excessive.

My Answer:
If the women didn't have anything to do with making the money then all of them.
Elin got $110 million for 8 years of "service" plus $300k a year in support till the kids are out of college. Tiger Woods was a superstar long before he married her. Elin was a $2400.00 a month nanny with a dream.

The only one I've actually heard of is Tiger's, and a google search only gives me some pretty wildly varying numbers. She takes 100 million out of 600, according to one source. Or she takes 250 million out of a billion dollar fortune according to another.
Isn't marriage supposed to be a partnerhsip? Taking one sixth or a quarter out of a marriage doesn't seem crazy to me, no matter how much money is involved.
Kobe and his wife apparently are not getting divorced after all.
Anyway, I've got a question for everyone. All this "whore" business got me thinking. What if it was the other way around?
Take a famous woman -- Gwen Stefani, for example. She's gotta be worth a fortune. Not Tiger-rich, but she's got a pretty big pile. She's been married for years, they've got kids, he was even kind of famous in his own right, but she obviously is the breadwinner.
So, tomorrow it comes out that all the while she's been married, she's been screwing the pool guy, the private chef, the waiter at the Hard Rock, her personal trainer, a Chippendale's dancer, and about 15 other dudes all over the country while she's on tour.
Now, it's time for a divorce. The question is, which one is the whore in this situation? Is she the whore, or is her husband?
Going by some of the "logic" we've seen in this thread, her husband is indeed the whore. He's a gold-digging whore. A bitch. He hasn't been putting out. He's been planning this all along.
In exactly the same situation, would you call the man a whore because his wife cheated on him? Of course not. Because it doesn't make sense. It's stupid.
Nobody would call the husband in this situation any of those things. If the guy happens to walk away from the divorce with 50 million dollars and the family home in Malibu, we wouldn't call him a whore or a slut. We'd probably call him "the guy who gets all the high fives".
The cheating wife would no doubt be called the whore. At least then it would make sense.

Some divorce settlements:
Mel Gibson - $450 million
Michael Jordon - $168 million
Neil Diamond - $150 million
Greg Norman - $103 million
Steven Spielberg - $100 million
Harrison Ford - $85 million
Kevin Costner - $80 million
The crown jewel was Robert Murdoch's divorce from Anna Murdoch, estimated at $1.7 billion. Two weeks later at age 68 he married a 30 year old. (that was one expensive little trade in)

I think a lot of people here don't understand what marriage is. It's giving up everything to become a family unit with someone. That means sharing everything (unless you have a prenup). That's more than just money, it means you put their needs/desires ahead of your own.
If they split, she isn't getting half of his money, she is getting half of their money.

When a guy gets divorced from a rich woman, he's not called a "whore" (and Bill Burr's use of the term makes no sense either), but, if he takes money in a divorce settlement, he's definitely called a loser who should have some pride.

For the lump sum payment, I agree, but alimony is "his money."

Of all the problems in this world that need fixing, guys with hundreds of millions of dollars only having half as many hundred of millions of dollars after divorce is probably way, way down the list for anyone with any perspective at all. Some of you appear to be projecting your own issues onto him. Well, whatever - he's a guy who is successful not because he discovered a cure for cancer, or built a business empire that employs thousands of people, or did anything socially useful, but because he is really good at playing a game. Excuse me while I laugh uproariously at the idea that he's losing out on his "fair share" of his money - if the world were "fair", he wouldn't have all that money in the first place.

I guess I sort of lost the the whole lofty social commentary angle when he said there is an "epidemic of gold digging whores in this country". That's not really my idea of social commentary. It's a sexist dick bitching about women in general.
When he got to the part about Kobe's wife being a gold-digger because she stuck with him, and then she was gold-digger for divorcing him, which simply doesn't make sense, I turned it off.
So, when it's not funny, and it doesn't make sense, and it's really just some fool who obviously just doesn't like women, I decided not to waste any more time.
I didn't get to the part about Arnold, but I'm sure it was enlightening.
I'm sure there are plenty of women out there looking to get their mitts on Kobe/Tiger/Arnold's money. Just like there are a lot of scumbag dudes looking to do exactly the same thing. Maybe the next segment of his act was bitching about an epidemic of sleazy, moneygrubbing men out there looking to take advantage of dumb rich guys, but I doubt it.
Anyway, we've seen this act a million times. Johnny Carson bitched about it for years, but at least he was funny, and it actually had something to do with him.
It's hard to be offended by something you see all time time. I guarantee there aren't an army of whores coming over the hill to screw this guy and take all his riches, so really, he's just another sexist dick with a microphone.
But you do seem to have some skin in this game. You seem kinda pissed off that a woman you've never met got some money from a guy who wouldn't speak to you.
Is it something you worry about happening to you? If so, what's your secret?
|
So, just to be clear, you're not offended and comedy never has an underlying social commentary. Gotcha
(If it wasn't funny, btw, why were all those people laughing? Why'd they give an unfunny sexist dick a standing ovation? Hmmmm....)
