Can NOT get behind a "fall for Hall" scenario, even though i do hope they get the number one pick...such a confusing time to be a flames fan. I know that they dont have what it takes to make it, but i absolutely cannot cheer for my fav team to tank it. I have a feeling the team will finish 9th-11th on their own, this is why i believe management needs to make the decision for them, and sell off some pieces. I cant cheer for this team anymore, with the players that are in place. No heart, no compete, no desire to win. Out-worked night in, night out. I can, however, get behind the next chapter

I wouldn't worry about that. The flames fell in love with the potential Jankowski showed and I think it was a great pick personally. Teravainen is another small winger that wouldn't have allowed the flames to land the 2nd round pick. Jankowski is big, smart and skilled. The only knack on him is his competition and development time. He played pretty good in te NCAA this year but is still likely 3 years from turning pro. The flames had the 14th pick in what is being called a pretty mediocre draft to me it was the perfect time to swing for the fences

Used to feel the same way. However, this season is a pretty unique situation. We've got a shortened season, that is already out of our hands in many ways. We've also got a ton of expiring or near expiring contracts and a very deep draft coming up.
This might be the Flames' only chance to avoid a long Oiler style rebuild. We're talkign about les than 20 games of failure to ensure years of success.
The Iggy issue brings an added push. If Iggy truly wants to be a Flame until retirment, he should do what's best for the team. He should allow himself to be traded, then re-sign with the Flames for a discount. It'll ensure the team he comes back to is more competitive.

The only thing they have in common is size. Such a lazy comparison based on just the fact that they're big, highly rated centers. Chief Pumpkinhead had a huge attitude and no brains for the game, he didn't even know how to play defense until Brent taught him. Barkov is the polar opposite of that - and he's still ahead of Olli in offensive development.

Oh definitely it's just crazy speculation, which is all we truly can do with in comes to their decisions.
But I mean this kid who could help us is sitting there, and they pass on him to trade down to take some kid from a bush league. The odd part is for a team focused on "now" they take a player who's so far from "now" it's not even funny. To me it's always come across as they think they see something that how many other scouts just didn't? Everyone in the NHL is pretty smart at their job, the scouts know hockey. The days of finding some kid in Sweden that no one knew about in these days of youtube and twitter? ... unlikely.

I thought New Jersey was going to pick Jankowski if the Flames hadn't? So the Flames weren't the only team that saw something in him.

I definitely agree that if there ever was a year, this is THE year. Morality comes into play though, and i think i will just have to not watch for a while....?

I agree. Barkov has high hockey IQ and a great 2 way game from what I watched. Hes also a young birth. Seems to check all the Flames boxes imo. Hes a year younger than Seth Jones. A year from now Barkov will be amazing considering how good he is now. his PPG is pretty close to Granlund at the same age while being much larger and defensively responsible. He just seems like the complete package outside of the trait which will not be named since we already went over that lol. I really think he would be high on the Flames list judging by their "new" draft philosophy and he is currently in the 5-10 range which means we dont have to full on tank to grab him most likely.

After watching the last 2 games I have lost all hope for this team.
We need Centers bad, big centers preferably, if we manage to get into the top 5 hopefully we can snag a Barkov or Mckinnon. Add in a couple of trades that would give us a few more picks in the late 1st or 2nd round and there might be some hope for the Flames a few years from now.

Teräväinen was rated way high by some experts but it's not like he's a sure bet so I don't know if Jankowski is any more of a long shot.
Teuvo is a smooth guy so he'll be nice to watch in Chicago if he makes it. He's cool jazz. I think Kane will be a good model for him (on the ice). But you probably should take the big center over him if you really think that the center has a decent chance of getting there.

The Flames were far from the only team to pass on Teravainen. This is a classic case of fans reading the draft previews and deciding who the best guys are from there.

That pick doesn't really worry me. Picking 14th is very different from picking in the top 5 or the top 2. There is never a clear "14th overall pick", especially in a questionable draft year.
This year is considered to be a much stronger draft year that is considerably deeper. From everyone is saying in this thread (and most discussions about this draft year) the Top5 of this draft appears to be a no brainer. Each team just needs to figure out where they will be drafting, who they feel is the BPA in that consensus top 5 and then make their pick based on their needs.
My general impression from this thread is that people are worried that if we pick MacKinnon over Drouin that Drouin will turn out to be the better player. To me this feels like splitting hairs. Regardless of which of these amazing prospects we possibly get, they would greatly help our team. I just hope that we fill our most noticable need and acquire a franchise center. If we are really lucky we will end up with two of them from the last two drafts.

First - how was Teravainen going to "help us" any more that Jankowski. The guy is a couple years away from the NHL.
Second - Jankowski was well known heading into the draft. He wasn't as much of a reach as some made him out to be. He went right around where many projected he would
Your entire perception of this pick and how it went down is really off the mark.

He went around where Craig Button, who likely has a pipeline into our room, projected him to go. That's not "many". Also the claims of "other teams were going to take him in the first round" which only come from our team sources don't really do much for me.
Either way, I hope I'm totally off base with my thoughts on Jankowski, because we need a player like they think he's going to be.

Personally, I agree so much more with this. Otherwise why even have a scouting department. Really if you went with the classic case of fans reading the draft previews and then deciding who are the best guys philosophy; you would just need someone who can read really well. So hopefully we will start to see some results. I think Weisenbrod is changing our drafting culture, and should be given some time to see how they are doing.
