This franchise is a lot closer to that than we all think. Thank god we as fans rabidly drink the Kool-Aid and keep stuffing the Flames pockets for a below mediocre team, in a below mediocre building, with a WAY below mediocre game presentation.
In any other market than a Canadian one. Our stands would look like Nassau's or Jobing's. The product is that bad.

Smith=197
The only guy that is undersized even a little is Brodie at 182 lbs. and he's been arguably one of our best defenders this year.

Thanks for the stats Kind of proves my point the Flames defensemen you have listed are all undersized.
Watching them play none play above their weight except for Sarich AND he doesn't play at all.
The average NHLer is 73.33" (6' 1 1/3") tall, weighs 204.42 lbs, and is 27.36 years old.
The average forward is 72.93" (6' 1") tall, weighs 202.4 lbs, and is 27.1 years old.
The average defenseman is 73.87" (6' 1 7/8") tall, weighs 209.66 lbs, and is 27.49 years old.

They somehow made it to the conference finals on the back of Jaroslav Halak.

I could care less what the average size of a player is. Lidstrom was 192 lbs. and he was by far the best defenseman of this generation. Being "over 200 lbs." as you put it doesn't mean anything if you can't play the game.
I will give you the fact that those defenders don't play like they are 200 lbs., but seriously, they are not what I would consider to be too small.
What is your source? the height I can buy, but the weight seems pretty high.
You know what? Nevermind...it still doesn't matter. Good players are not defined by size.

Their actual physical stature isn't even relevant. They play small. You can clearly see this team is pushed around by basically every team that is going to be in our new division (next year). They tried to remedy that with Mcgratton but I think someone in the top six needs to be traded for a gritty 2 way player and a younger rugged dman if Jordano isn't going to pick it up.

@psytic, that I would be ok with. Your post made a lot more sense of things. Thanks.

Boston has Chara 255 McQuaid 208, Boychuck 225 Siederman 210 and then undersized Ferrence can be skating around running anyone he wants.
The flames need 2 rugged d-men plus Gio.
Gio by himself can't carry all the physical work required by NHL defense.
Swap Gio for Ferrence and Gio becomes a feared hitter/tough guy and Ferrence quickly becomes a no-hitter.

It's one thing to bitch about the guy but tell us what you would do if you were in his place, and to say "I'd sign a #1 centre" ,yea where you going to get him?

Yeah, but this is message board for fans to vent on...some of the trades are waaaay out there to be sure, but really thats part of the fun.
Message boards wouldn't be half the fun without armchair coaches or GMs

I honest to god think that people on this message board could do a better job than current management.
Flame away, but there is some really strong hockey (and asset management) knowledge.
Not talking about my own unqualified ass whatsoever.

venting is fine, hell I love venting but I find some of the deep hate for Feaster a little over the top. I haven't seen one trade proposal from anyone that's available to Feaster, just bitching, no solutions. Some have mentioned Burkes name.....no thanks.

I honest to god think you're wrong, there are only 30 NHL GMs in the world, 30, not an easy task to take on. Much easier doing it from a key board.

If the Flames truly want to make Iggy a Flame for life, I would imagine they are trying to get him signed before the trade deadline.
If he isn't signed by April 3, 2013...I would guess the only option is to trade him.
If he doesn't sign and isn't traded before the April 3 deadline...It would be hard to believe he will still be a Flame after the season is done.
If the Flames loose Iggy to free agency...Feaster, Ken King and anyone else in charge of managing the teams assets should be turfed

I'm arguing that the ability to understand the NHL, the trends and values, the names and players, understanding the game, how the NHL works, how a team would function, strategy management, asset valuation and maximization, negotiations... these are all skills that people have.
People on this message board have these skills.
Your argument that there are only 30 jobs available doesn't really address anything at all. In fact it's mostly irrelevant. But I guess I agree, there are 30 jobs. You are right about that.

I am sure he would be on our first line but that don't make him a true 1st line center. He hasn't even hit 20 goals yet. Maybe he amounts to more but it looks like a hell of a gamble and over payment when we can just keep our pick in a good draft and get a guy on an elc.
|
You can extend the player before needing to qualify him. Long term deal at 5 million for example.
The kid is a great young hockey player. And he plays the most important position up front. Him making 5.5 doesn't prevent Feaster from trying to get a 1st line centre somehow. And frankly him and Backlund together might have been a good enough 1-2 combo in a year or two.
But that is all moot. And hopefully we find a #1 centre in the draft this year.

C'mon man. That's like suggesting people that are great with lego and love achitecture can design bridges.
I think fans often mistake philosophically different approaches with stupidity. Those that want nothing but picks and prospects assume the management must be stupid for not making moves that follow that path. It's fine (and fun) to debate the approach, but I think it's naive to think pros don't get it.
