Feaster is playing it smart right now. If you have assets like Kipper and Iggy you don't want to broadcast to the world you are intending to definitely let them go. People will low ball you if you do. Instead, you perpetuate the illusion that you are a team considering competing and these assets need to be pried out.

Anyone hear Maher in the morning yesterday?
Peter was talking about Jay going to the GM meetings in Toronto and hoping that Jay would talk to some of his friends who are GMs' and maybe ask for some advice on what to do.
All I could think of was "wow, even our play by play guy, a guy who has daily access to this team, thinks that our GM is a little inexperienced and needs help from OTHER GM's to figure out what to do".
Maybe I misinterpreted what Peter was saying, but I found that rather scary.

Never in the History of the NHL has such a undersized non-aggressive team been put together.
Can you provide an example of a team that is this small and passive that has ever won one playoff game?
Sutter had Langkow and Conroy and he went out and made the big move to land Jokinen.

When Feaster was in Tampa, it honestly makes me believe that his duties as Assistant GM rivaled those of a Mike Holditch here in Calgary.

One thing to keep in mind is that we don't know with 100% certainty that he has full control of personnel decisions. If he had been given full control with no mandate to stay competitive or re-tool, we may see him be able to exercise some more meaningful trades or signings for the team.
I would wager to say that Feaster knows what he has to do with this team and for the future (aka Jay understands the mentality of this board)... but he also knows what he has to do to keep his job - which may prevent him from exercising full potential on what he knows he CAN do.

2009-10 Montreal Canadiens off the top of my head comes to mind. They had 11 players under 6 feet tall, and their real only physical guys on that team were Hal Gill and Laraque. No one on that team really screamed "agressive play" either, with guys like Cammalleri, Plekanec, Gomez, M-A Bergeron leading the team in scoring.
They somehow made it to the conference finals by playing a skilled game and taking advantage on the powerplay.

I think Feaster was going for a disciplined skilled team like Detroit, but it did not work. There are lots of reasons.
The easier formula is a power team like Anaheim, Toronto or LA. Same approach completely turned the Flames around in 2-3 years from cellar dwellers to conference champs.
Tweaking the formula, and undervaluing chemistry guys like the ones Flames had in spades during 2003-2006 is what got them where they are now.
Jokinen cost Sutter his job. Bad example.
