Life after the trade deadline
I thought about posting this in one of the other trade deadline threads, but I felt like this is different enough to warrant a new thread. Mods, please merge if it should be part of an ongoing discussion.
With all this trade talk, what do you think the line-up will look like on April 5th against the Sharks?
Although we all want to blow this thing up sky high, I don't see management trading more than 4 or 5 assets at the deadline. After all, they still need to ice a line-up for the remainder of the season.
I won't speculate on the returns, because that's too hard to predict. With that said, on April 3rd, I think the following guys get traded:
Iginla - Has already been discussed why numerous times
Stempniak - Having a great season for his standards, no NMC/NTC and slightly redundant. Typical case of sell high.
Cammalleri - Good 2nd liner for a team contending for the cup. Won't be part of the future in Calgary. Having a decent season, so probably has good trade value.
Bouwmeester - Possibly the highest trade value of his career at this moment. A lot of teams need what he brings to the table, so again, a case of sell high.
With those players gone, the line-up against the Sharks would look something like this:
Tanguay - Backlund - Hudler
Glencross - Stajan - Baertschi
Horak - New Centre/AHL player/Cervenka - Comeau
McGrattan - Begin - Jackman
Aliu
Brodie - Wideman
Giordano - Butler
Smith - Sarich
Babchuk
Kiprusoff
McDonald
Admittedly, it's not a great line-up, but a lot better than I would have thought.

I think it actually happens this season, Jarome gets dealt at the deadline.
I think he goes to Boston.
Jarome Iginla - Boston
Cory Sarich - Montreal
Tim Jackman - Pittsburgh
Anton Babchuk - Carolina
Any other big moves (Bouwmeester, Tanguay or Cammy) will happen in the summer, if at all.

The problem with Bouwmeester, Cammalleri, Sarich and a to a lesser extent Stempniak is that they are not done next year.
Any team that wants them will likely be close to the cap this year and over it next year. Next year is crunch time and there will be all sorts of guys cut loose,, either bought out or available for prospects or low draft picks... the UFA market will be lower than it was this last year...... for instance Hudler and Wideman would not have been Flames this year at their current deals if the cap was 64M.
Using the Flames as an example they have 17M cap space to sign 12-13 players next year including an Iginla replacement.... If Iginla signs for say 5M they are left with 12 million to sign 12 players..... keeping in mind that Baertschi is a 1.4M cap hit
They will not be signing adding like Cammalleri or Bouwmeester unless it is as an Iginla replacement.
Any trade has to be done at the trade deadline, to a GM that is even more desperate than Feaster.

We need an over/under how many times CP will crash if any of those players are traded.

I don't think much will happen, because almost all the key players we want traded have some sort of NMC/NTC.

I still see this team being the same after teh trade deadline. Down and out even with Kipper and Iginla still on the team. Sorry, but I just think the Flames will be like the last couple years and stay put if they find themselves close to the last playoff spot again...

I hope not. The silence from Feaster actually is interesting compared to previous years around the deadline.

I think if Iggy gave a list of teams he's willing to go to, the wheels are in motion. I hope he's dealt soon and by the deadline some other guys on the team want out.
I think if all that happens, after the deadline we'll be looking at a team that is going to be less successfull than they are now but might be more fun to watch.

Why does everyone think that if we trade Iginla we fix all the teams problems? look at columbus they traded Nash.... they are only one spot ahead of us.
why would you trade your best player in an attempt to get better ? It makes no sense even if you trade for a good player with upside there is no garuntee that they will become the next iginla or even contribute to a cup.

It's not about getting better now. It's about getting assets that can make a positive impact in the near future. Look at the line-up I posted. Definitely not better than what we have right now, but it does two things. A) It opens up spots for guys like Baertschi and Horak to show what they're worth, and B) It stocks the shelves for next year and beyond.
Short term pain = long term gain.

Nice post. I`m amazed it even had to be made tho. Nash wanted out and the moves were designed to improve the team long term. Anywho.

I would argue the BJ's are a better team this year compared to last.

I could partially agree with you but I think the reason was because of all the animosity between Nash and their stupid GM

I have a sickening feeling in my stomach that it's gonna be pretty much the same squad. Maybe an extra defenseman added for depth if contracts permit.
I hope to God I'm wrong and a firesale happens. But I have my doubts

We will sit by the radio and tv all day with rumors of Iginla being on his phone and imminent trade. As the deadline expires its announces Iginla has signed a 3 year extension and the flames trade 1st round pick for Derek Roy the franchise center we have always wanted, as we are going for it.

This is going to be a tense couple of weeks surrounding the deadline. I would really like to see Jarome win a cup.

The people that don't understand why the Iginla situation needs to be addressed are any of the following:
a) Bigger Iginla fans than Flames fans
b) Very young
C) Idiots
These are the only conclusions at present I can come up with. The Blue Jackets are better off with Nash gone. They will be in the playoffs before the Flames.
And by addressed for Iggy I mean he either needs to be signed up, or traded.
