THN asks NHL scouts to re-rank last draft
http://www.thehockeynews.com/article...NHL-draft.html
Quote:
In establishing our top 50 list of NHL-affiliated prospects in our recently released Future Watch 2013, we canvassed scouts from every NHL team and asked them to project five to 10 years out on the best players in the system league-wide. St. Louis right winger Vladimir Tarasenko finished No. 1 on the list, while Future Watch 2012 winner Evgeny Kuznetsov slipped to No. 3.
Based on the feedback from scouts, we re-ranked the order of the 2011 first round in Future Watch 2013. Had it been held today, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Gabriel Landeskog would still be at the top of the list (don’t let RNH’s recent struggles cloud the big picture on him). I won’t give away all the results because it’s in the issue, but interesting evaluations to cull from it are: Dougie Hamilton would have moved way up from being selected ninth overall to inside the top five; and Duncan Siemens (11th overall) and Jamie Oleksiak (14th) would have slipped outside the top 20.
Of course, this exercise doesn’t take into consideration individual team preferences. Though we’ll never know for sure publicly, maybe the Colorado Avalanche would still take Siemens 11th overall even though the scouting community at large wouldn’t touch him until at least the 20th pick.

Jankowski only dropped 4 spots, so he isn't quite the reach that was proclaimed at the draft

I wonder how much Johnny Hockey would have moved up in retrospect? Even with this size issue I still think he's going to end up being a steal for us...

I like Baerstchi and all, but how awesome would it be if we had drafted JT Miller instead (in 2011). Him and Gueadreau had some chemistry in the Juniors.

Not sure why Oleksiak would drop, 6'7', 245 lb dman putting up 29 pionts in 48 games in the AHL seems pretty impressive to me.

pointless exercise in my book, only nine months after the draft. That could be an interesting thing in three years though.

I hated Miller's game in the WJ's - he was a major puck hog and pretty much every offensive possession ended with him trying to go one on everyone and then take a shot from the perimeter.
I am happy with Baertschi.

Miller? Are you confusing him with Grimaldi? Miller was setting Gaudreau up all tourney.
But you are right, I'd rather have Sven.

Not confusing them. Admittedly, compared to Grimaldi, Miller looked like Mother Teresa. But I thought Miller was also a major puck hog.

So according to them, there are five players who were available when we picked Jankowski who will be better than him.

Dumba is ranked 10 spots below where he was drafted. I recall he was on a lot people's wish lists around here.
I agree that this type of thing isn't that meaningful though.

Not overly meaningful, but it does show that just 9 months later a lot has changed, even at the top end of the draft. I wish people would remember this when they're freaking out because a guy is still on the board three picks later than some list had him projected to go.

Ranking them right now isn't completely meaningful, but it does provide some insight.
Ultimately, Feaster will be judged on how well Jankowski performs vs. these centres.
11. Teuvo Teravainen, C (taken 18th by Chicago)
12. Scott Laughton, C (taken 20th by Philadelphia)
13. Tomas Hertl, C (taken 17th by San Jose)
18. Zemgus Girgensons, C (taken 14th by Buffalo)
21. Stefan Matteau, C (taken 29th by New Jersey)
24. Henrik Samuelsson, C (taken 27th by Phoenix)

I will never understand why we passed on Teravainen. Not a knock on Jankowski by any means but he seems like a textbook example of a guy who fits the mold of what management is looking for.

Because this is the Calgary Flames, where normal logic and reasoning ceases to exist on draft day.

Doesn't Jankowski fit that mold too?

Internet Hockey DB has him at 5'10" and HockeyFutures has him at 5'11" 165 lbs
I doubt he ever plays C in the NHL - LW is more likely IMO.
I'll take Jankowski

I would guess a big centreman would fit any teams mold. With that said, Teravainen has been producing in a league full of men whereas Jankowski is years from making an impact. I appreciate that they were going for the home run but I think there is a much greater chance of Teravainen reaching his career potential out of the two.
