Good win at home.

Backlands is fun to cheer for. All four lines looked good. Only negative was that kipper looks pretty lost, it seems like he has no idea where the puck is most of the time.

In any case, good win.

Kind of annoyed that it took so long for Hartley to move Cammalleri to the middle when he looked good there the last part of last season; surely he watched the games from last season during the lockout. Instead, he tried Tanguay, Hudler, Comeau there for like 20 games. Lots of talk about him winning draws which is important but more importantly he is really good and engaged in the defensive zone which was sorely lacking when the team played all those games with one actual center.

Hopefully Giordano gets some praise for tonight which was undoubtedly his best game of the season.

Stempniak is deadly streaking down the right side and Glencross is just plain deadly especially when he goes hard to the net. Whenever he thinks he's a big offensive talent, goes perimeter and soft. That's why it's a good fit being with Stempniak and Stajan rather than with Iginla.

Continue to love Backlund's defensive play. The team is a lot better in its own end when he is healthy and the team has two actual centers in the lineup.

I'm still not really sure what to make of this team though things are shaping up like they could be dominant at home and doormats on the road which simply isn't going to do it. They have themselves still in the mix but hanging by a thread. Need four points on three game road trip and it isn't nearly as tough of competition as they got in California.

They look like they have a chance when its not against big physical teams. Maybe they just need to trade out some guys for some size and 2 way forwards. They aren't really that fast so I don't think it would hurt anything.

Here's my math:

Current 8th place team, Phoenix, has 29 points in 27 games, so they're earning 1.074 points per game. Project that over the remaining games, the 8th place team will have 51.5 pts.

So 52 points is the target.

Flames currently have 26 pts, so they need 26 pts in their remaining 22 games to get 8th.

If they can go say 6-3 in their remaining home games, they'll need 14 points from their 13 road games to hit the target.

Playoff odds jumped to 25% or so on sportsclubstats. Not an easy route by any stretch, but it looks better after this win.

And just like that, with Detroit getting it to OT, it's four.

I definitely agree. Feaster thinks he addressed the team's lack of toughness by bringing in McGrattan but the only forwards who actually play a regular shift that can play a physical style, Iginla and Glencross, don't do it very much anymore. I will say that this team has shown a lot more willingness to play in high traffic areas than the previous few years and they score a lot more goals by driving hard to the net.

But the bigger issue is that the blueline is very very soft and of course there isn't any size or strength up the middle so they are going to get manhandled down low by big, strong teams like...Anaheim, Los Angeles, Colorado which make up 6 of the team's 11 losses. The only big, physical defenseman is one of the slowest skaters in the league and rarely even dresses. Not a very well-built hockey team but they can definitely move the puck and generate offense a lot better than many Flames teams from over the years. Even if they can hang in the playoff mix, I do have trouble seeing this team having success in physical, tight-checking, low scoring battles down the stretch drive.
