I'll never be able to fathom the optimism some have with our team. Especially with such a well documented body of work from this core over the last 3 years.
We're below .500 for the 1st half the season and at or near the bottom of the league and people are talking about winning the NW. Even mildly suggesting it is bizare to me.

Six points sounds "close", but people don't seem to understand how hard it is to get to 53 points.

I am not sure why Flames fans set their sights so low.
If the Flames win their game in hand on the Hawks, and then they win their next 10 games and the Hawks lose their next 10 games in regulation, the Flames can pass Chicago. 3rd in the conference and 1st in the division seems a little defeatist to me.

I am extremely confident they will get 53 points next season.

Given these stats of Sportsclub are entirely computer generated and based on existing record - how can they be even remotely accurate about games yet to be played? Games to be played are obviously a relevant variable in assessing playoff chances. Moreover, the results cannot include any element of "humanism" (meant to include things like emotion, injury, confidence ...) in the game.

Read about his methodology if you want. He mentions that injuries to siginicant players will give you a lower rating than reality.

lol at the people who are so optimistic that they are making negative comments to people who don't think the Flames will make the playoffs.
The Flames are 5 points out of 8 and tied for 15th. It isn't impossible to make the playoffs but I fail to see how a team that has done this poorly so far is going to somehow turn things around and go on a magical run and make the playoffs.
People who don't think the Flames can make the playoffs aren't any less than fans who do think they can. They're just more realistic.

Plus the fact that the only two team currently in the playoffs that have even the smallest chance of faltering in my opinion are Phoenix and Minnesota, there are so many variables that have to go right it is a longshot at best. I would compare the Flames playoff chances to getting the first three numbers of the lottery and having to get the last three numbers for the jackpot. They currently have the free play (playing in the NHL), they have a small chance to get another number out of the 4 left to be drawn (an 11th place finish), the have even a smaller chance of getting two more numbers (9th place) a real small chance of getting three more numbers (making the playoffs) and a miniscule chance of winning the Cup (Jackpot). But they do have a chance at all of those results.

I look at it this way. the Flames have 23 games to make up 5 points on 6 teams, but of those 23 half of those games (or potential points) are taken away by the loser point, so now they have to make up 5 points from 12 games while 6 other teams have to tank at least 3 games worse than them, not theoretically impossible, but in practise it is.

Looking at the standings, good lord do those two losses against the Avs really hurt, especially the one where we had a 3-0 lead after one and a 4-2 lead after two.
Win those two and we're sitting in eighth right now, two points off division lead, with a game in hand on both Minny and Van.
Ah well, another year, another handful of crucial, detrimental losses I guess.

Each team through 27 games played:
Chicago - 47
Anaheim - 44
Minnesota - 32
Los Angeles - 32
St Louis - 32
Vancouver - 32
San Jose - 30
Detroit - 29
Phoenix - 29
Nashville - 28
Dallas - 27
Calgary - 26 (1 game in hand)
Edmonton - 26
Columbus - 25
Colorado - 24 (1 game in hand)
A win against Dallas on Monday puts us in 10th, 1 point out of a playoff spot, through 27 games played for all teams.

If we do sneak into the playoffs and face either Chicago or Anaheim... what are the honest to god chances we can pull off a win?
