Celebrated Square Root Day

I'm surprised so many are saying Glencross. He's definitly valuable to the team, but purely from a fan perspective, he tends to take selfish penalties, has lazy shifts/games, and seems to pout when he's taken off the top lines. All characteristics I'd shy away from when choosing a captain.

Agreed. I think he's barely even A material

God please no to Glencross as Captain.
We need a guy who shows up every game and every shift. If we don't have a guy like that, then you just run with 3 A's.

That would do wonders for the mood on the board.

Iginla will remain Captain of this team for years to come.
I have (albeit little) faith that trade deadline will see Calgary do the smart thing and acquire assets to rent Iginla, but his family and passion live here and he will resign in the summer (hopefully with a new piece of jewelry).
Then, years down the road... a young asset Calgary acquired will have stepped up and proven to the the next leader of this squad. Iginla will walk into the steam room and tell him "I want to give you the captaincy" and the kid will respond "Great. I'll take it."

I used to think Gio but now, not so sure.
Out of the guys left, I would say Hudler honestly. He's totally captain material. Plays hard every single shift, veteran who understands the game and how to win.

Obviously its impossible to replace the Captain we have in Iginla as the guy is a saint off the ice and determined player on the ice. We don't really have many choices in our system when you define what you want in a leader. Skill, loyalty, passion, consistency and a guy that every other player can look up to.
I definitely would have gone with Gio prior to the year starting. I don't think Hudler has the right attitude to be a captain. Wideman should possibly be considered for next season though as he's the right age and contract length. I've seen much passion from him and when the flames are down he seems to make an effort to get the team back on track. Also seems comfortable calling out the team when we have been doing poorly.
I'd rather someone who has most of the important skill sets versus one who's just a determined veteran with little skill i.e Horcoff or Chris Clark. Boumeester may be another choice, but hes not really someone to look up to with his soft play unless if course your players just want to be on the ice every game to earn their full pay check.
Definitely don't give captainsy to a young guy because that's too much pressure to put on a youngster and you want more experience in this league. It's not like we have a Giroux type player who is a complete professional for his age.

If I had to pick someone on the current roster besides Iginla, I would probably say Tanguay.
After that, maybe Cammaleri, Wideman and Hudler in that order.
In a few years, perhaps Brodie.

That was me. A couple of years ago he threw himself in front of a lot of shots. It was the kind of play you noticed game in and game out, and he was 3rd in the league in 2010-11. It was debatable that he perhaps blocked too many, to a fault, but it was a noticeable part of his game. You don't see that 'whatever it takes to win' part of his game anymore and I stand by that remark.
