Not the energized attitude of last year or from training camp this year. Hope Sven doesn't mope about the AHL bump for too long.
Granted its only been 1 game back but his comments are so woe is me.
Pick up the boot straps kid what did you expect you had 1 assist in 10 games.

If anyone wants to listen in and see how Baertschi is doing, they play Texas at 6:30 MT.

Listen in here: http://www.teamradio.ca/abbotsford-heat/

EDIT - The Texas Stars are the best team in the AHL, so if the Heat can pull it off, it'd be a massive confidence booster.

Backlund? He of 51 career points at the age of 24? A little too early to call him a success. Also, an arguement could be made that he would be much further along if he was treated differently.

1. He's 23.

2. He's the best forward on the team at moving the puck forward and maintaining possession. Nearly every player on the team that plays with him gets more scoring chances with playing on a line with him than when they don't. Petty impressive. This is the part of his game that might not have developed as quickly if he was treated differently.

3. He's finally shooting at a more normal shooting percentage. I expected him to take a step forward by this metric this year based on the players his career path has paralleled so far, and he has not disappointed.

I think that qualifies as a successfully developing a NHL Player. It's much too early to determine how great of a success it was, but just getting a solid NHL player that can drive possession on any line and score a few goals matches reasonable expectations for a late 1st round pick.

On topic, once Beartchi scores a goal or two, I think you'll see him get his swagger back quite quickly. He's going to have to learn to fight through scoring droughts as they happen to nearly every player.

Backlund is a playmaking center at heart. As such he makes his linemates better. But that is meaningless without offensive production. At this point, I wouldn't call Backlund an NHL player yet. He's been given chances based on his potential and status of being a 1st round pick.

Backlund is an NHL player wether it be 2nd or 3rd line center. I think he needs a fresh start on a new team though.

He's still extremely soft on the puck, avoids the tough areas of the ice and is often injured. He has a long way to go to being a centre in the NHL, luckily for him, he will see a lot of icetime with good wingers.

Really has to learn to win a faceoff and how to tie up the other centre on defeat.

Why would he need a new team? He has a new coach, can't get a cleaner slate than that.

He needs 2+ years starting now of staying healthy, no more minor (very minor) injuries.

Backlund looks great this year. Unless he goes totally off the rails, he will be a full time NHL player from here on out. I'm very happy with how his game has progressed.

How'd Sven do last night? Doesn't look good:

47 Baertschi, Sven LW 0 0 -1 2 0

Hmmm............coach must not be giving him the opportunity to succeed down in Abby.

Does Backlund look like an ideal 3rd line center to you? He's top 6 player or back to Europe IMO. He needs to stay healthy and produce offensively, otherwise you will see him aging in Europe sooner rather than later.

Backlund has not avoided the tough areas of the ice this season. He continually goes to the net every game. Nice try though, continue your Backlund hate train regardless of what he does on the ice. Choo-choo!

He could grow into one much like how Stajan has. He's not a 1st line talent but I still think he has the skills to play in the NHL. I feel he simply needs to play more and his game will come around.

Exactly. Brodie is a good example. Had a great training camp 3 seasons ago and played some games. Slid off a bit then got sent down. Pouted a bit and didn't have a great training camp the next season. Gets sent down and a lot of talk that he is done. Get's called back up after playing well in the minors and no turning back now.

Sven should use the Brodie situation as an example. Don't pout, play hard and be better off in the long term.

What about Tyler Wotherspoon? Hopefully, he'll get an entry level deal soon with the Flames.

And if I heard correctly, he missed the net in the shootout. God I hope this team doesn't stunt his growth.

Apparently Sven said himself this is the lowest he's ever felt (confidence wise)
Yes, it is Calgary's fault he is sucking.
