I have the draft special from last year and the hockey news I believe were the highest on him and had him going between 27-37 in the draft.

I agree with you surprised that he even got a nomination, but if you look at raw tools he has a ton of them. High upside, but a long way to go. The scouts that chose him for the list must be inclined for upside over probability.

But I like the high risk high reward strategy

I don't have any problem with it in that draft as it was weak on top end prospects so swinging for the fences makes some sense. I don't want them going high risk high reward this season in the first round where there are plenty of very solid prospects.

its pretty good news to see that those doing the ranking still believe he's in the top 25 of would be NHLers. I'm happy with his development. I thought he did a lot of growing, and with him and gillies, the Friars have been been a better team than in recent years.

I'd say Gillies should be on that list. He's outperformed every 2012 goaltender.

I still think Providence needs to make the Final Four Tournament, and Gillies show some of his stuff off there to get people really noticing. Providence is still a pretty big unknown as a hockey team to most people, hell I bet even if you polled some hockey journalists from TSN and Sportsnet a bunch wouldn't be able to tell you what conference they play in.

I agree but I think like Johnny Gaudreaus coming out party was the WJC this year Gillies will be next year. I think he is the favorite to start for the Americans.

I think with Goalies it's such a crap shoot that they are pretty much impossible to rank. I really don't judge the Flames for choosing Kidd over Brodeur, no scouts can determine what goalie develops into a starter. That's why I am 100% against drafting a goalie in the first round.

I think the best strategy with regard to goaltenders is to draft a solid goaltender every draft, and hope that one becomes a starter. I think that is what the Flames are doing, Ortio, Brossoit, and Gilles all at least have potential. Draft another one this year and be patient with all of them. You never know what you might get

He hasn't outperformed Subban.

Some people are crazy and Subban has been one if the best goalies in the CHL this year.

Subban has had a better year and is easily the better goalie. Who knows what it means going forward but it doesn't take away anything from Gillies who has had a good year as well.

I dunno... statistically speaking they're very close. So what's more impressive Gillies getting those stats in the NCAA as a 19yo or Subban getting them in the CHL as a 19yo?

Gillies: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...95&encode=TRUE
Subban: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=124602

To be frank I havn't seen either of them enough to make a judgement, based on an eye test, as to which is better.

Is the NCAA even harder for goalies? Serious question, I would think the CHL is harder to put up good numbers

The NCAA seems slower paced, more like the KHL to the CHL's NHL style game.

Granted, I haven't watched a ton of NCAA hockey so I could have gotten an poor impression.

The best way to compare them, IMO, is to compare each of them against their peers in their own leagues. Who is dominating more against their own peers? That would give you a good indication of which goalie had the better year.

So, for example, Subban has had to stop the likes of Ryan Murphy and Strome? Whereas Gillies has had to put up with Fredrick Roy and Johnny Hockey?

Personally, I'd say they've been fairly even. Maybe a slight edge to Subban because he's had to play about 15 more games. Then again, Gillies has had to face older, more mature players...

What I am saying is that Subban has faced the same players as the other goalies in the OHL, so how has he done vs them? Likewise for Gillies vs other NCAA goalies.

Subban has pretty much identical numbers to Binnington and they are leading most catagories.

As good as Gillies has been, there are goalies in the NCAA with stupid-good numbers. Gillies is 16th in GAA, 9th in SVP and 2nd in SOs

Now, I think you have to add a filter that Subban is 19 and should be dominating his league, whereas Gillies is a rookie playing against guys several years older. If we could get stats on just the rookie goalies, I think we would see similar domination from Gillies.

This is what jumped out at me too when thinking about this. He's facing guys four years older then him, which is pretty big at that age.

Doesn't Gillies have his own thread? I thought this was the Jankowski thread?

A tough question. I have the impression that CHL games feature higher scoring, so a high save percentage might be harder to achieve. On the other hand, the players in college hockey are older (maybe with better hockey smarts) than CHL players. And, IIRC, when junior teams play college teams, they usually lose - most recent example was the national junior team losing to a Canadian college team. I would lean toward the CHL goalies having a harder time putting up good numbers.
