Bunk,
Without talking about the bridge can you shed any light on the discussion about legal action blocking future work?

I am curious if anything like that actually exists in writing and if so, where would one find that document.

Thanks

This bridge is subject to AWS D1.5 code of construction. Inspection was required to be performed by a Canadian welding beurau level 3 welding inspector or recognized equivalent ( amarican welding society certified welding inspector) . That inspection would be the responsibility of the contractor ( graham) if they didn't do it or their inspector did not flag the welds as rejectable in Spain that is on Graham and their inspection company. I don't see Graham having much of a leg to stand on.

When people complain about the price they should remember that we could have received Edmonton's $28 million dollar monstrosity. Are those columns in the middle PVC piping?

You're never gonna have super tall things adjacent to the river due to the shadowing laws, but 3 Eau Claire will look awesome behind the bridge.

That was not me, but I did see a few other folks walking around taking pictures. In fact I can't remember a time I've been at the bridge that there hasn't been someone there taking pictures!

I would have been the guy with the sweet bright orange double wide chariot stroller and the grumpy 8 month old that didn't want to stop to let me take some shots!

Since we're posting pictures of the Peace Bridge. Here's one of my favorites that I took in December. It was posted back then in the "Never Ending Photos" thread.

Completely agree. I was in Calgary recently and had never seen the bridge in person, I actually forgot it existed. Seeing it while driving down Memorial at night was great, it gave me a sense that the city has ambition to continue to be more than an oil town on the prairies.

I love the bridge and design. I hate the location.

Where do you think would be better?

I think the location is pretty good, but needs to have a crossing of memorial right at the bridge, not a block down.

^ thank you for proving my point. with 2 other bridges about 500m on either side, this one wasnt necessary where it is.

Oh we've been over this many many times. The 500m distance seems piddly when you drive by at 50km/h on Memorial, but scale it down to average walking/running/biking speeds and it scales perfectly.

That is without even getting into how useless the bridge under the LRT bridge is, you can damn near touch each side with your arms spread out. And the bridge to the east is a little wider but is a jam-packed area during the morning/evening commute. I'd love for it to be wider.

Reminds me of the Toronto knock off that people were talking about for a while... until it was actually made.
The first article.
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/calgary-pea...193314490.html
Quote:
A new pedestrian bridge about to be installed in Toronto bears a striking resemblance Calgary's contentious Peace Bridge, but it comes with a much smaller price tag.
Puente de Luz — which means 'bridge of light' — will connect a chasm created by downtown Toronto's vast rail corridor south of Front Street between Spadina Avenue and Bathurst Street.
But in contrast to Calgary's $24.5-million Peace Bridge designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava — which will span the Bow River at Eau Claire Park near Seventh Street S.W. — Toronto's new walkway only cost $8 million.
And private developers are paying for it, said Toronto city councillor Adam Vaughan.
"It doesn't cost the taxpayers a penny," he said. "It's part of a development agreement in exchange for land use changes."
Like the Peace Bridge, Toronto's walkway is a bright color, has a windowpane design and a tubular shape.
A lot of bragging from Toronto and a lot of laughing from Peace Bridge detractors in this thread because of that one article.

Then of course... it was finished.

Get what ya pay for I guess.

^^ That Toronto bridge looks like a cheap Chinese knockoff of the real thing... which it pretty much is I guess.

I like the comment that private developers are paying for it making it seem free. The developers are paying for it as part of a deal to get something else. If they paid the city for what they wanted and the city paid for the bridge would it suddenly cost the city money?

Perhaps moving it a block and having it connect with Prince's Island would be better, but that might make access control more difficult when they close the park for ticketed events.

Haha, what a piece of crap. However, it crosses a bunch of rail lines, so I guess it's suitably trashy.

The best part is a G&M article with this picture and this caption.
