Not even just reading in between the lines, the article seemed to read between the lines with a slant (which is usually what happens to anyone reading in between the lines, not just Francis).

If Iginla was going to leave for the chance at a Cup he would have done it by now. Outside of 03-04 and 05-06 the Flames have either missed the playoffs or have struggled to make the playoffs followed by a first round exit. At this point in his life, my bet is his decision comes down to what is best for his family. If they are happy in Calgary and the money is right. He stays. He might even take a discount to stay to keep his family content.
Iginla has a had a great carrer and has won pretty much everything their is to win in hockey outside of a Stanley Cup. At his age I'm sure he is thinking more about life after hockey and about his kids lives. Getting traded to a contender is no guarantee of a Stanley cup and to disrupt your family life proably isn't worth the risk.

That's poor logic as its not every year that his contract is up.

Worst case is iginla doesn't care about winning a cup, he only cares about finishing out his career where he is nice and comfortable like Doan.
Flames re-sign 36 year old iginla to a 4 year, 4.5 per contract, announce arena to be completed for start of 2016 season.

If Iginla really likes Calgary, why not trade him at the deadline and re-sign him in the off-season?
The Flames get assets and Iginla is back in Calgary.
Or does that somehow spoil Jarome Iginla's legacy as the Calgary Flame.

I don't think Iginla signs in Calgary for that amount. See Doan's most recent contract for what to expect.

In Iginla's mind it might spoil it; however, if Iginla allows himself to be traded for the assets this team needs to help turn the franchise around, and then he comes back this offseason, I feel it will boost his legacy.

I doubt Jarome Iginla would give up on Calgary so easily, Iginla and Shane Doan are cut from the same cloth and if Doan wouldn't even leave the struggling franchise of the Phoenix Coyotes...
The Flames have done their best trying to accommodate Jarome bringing in his buddies Alex Tanguay & Mike Cammalleri, Iginla even tried to convince Brad Richards to sign on with the Flames for nine years ($65 million 7.2 cap hit)
Vincent Lecavalier is likely the next #1 centremen target for Jay Feaster.

The Coyotes made the conference final last year...not exactly apples-to-apples

I don't necessarily agree with this, Iginla still had some great years in him and I think his loyalty and sense of responsibility to the organization kept him here until now. But with the contract finishing up and the state of the team where it is...I highly doubt just settling in and being comfortable is on his mind. He's one of the best players of his generation, he wants to win.
As far as disrupting his family goes, the guy is one of the most well paid athletes in his sport, he's not going to have an issue flying back and forth, moving or keeping his family where necessary, or even returning to Calgary in the offseasons or retiring here in a few years if he chooses to. For someone with his wealth I just don't see geography being a huge deal as far as his family goes, especially if its only short term. The opportunity to win the cup is fleeting but the long term security of his family is guaranteed right now. I don't see that as a big of a factor as some do.
That being said, if you are right and Iginla chooses to re-sign in Calgary and finish his career here, I really hope the fans don't backlash against him. He's earned the right to determine his own future.

Big difference though given Doan re-signed coming off a very promising playoff run and is surrounded by some very nice pieces. Only question for him was team staying in Phoenix which it sounds like he was assured of.
I don't think Iginla is giving up on Calgary very easily. He's given them his whole career and given them loads of time to put together a contending team and has taken a discount to help make that happen. I view it as Jarome has given all he has to Calgary and without help he can't give anymore which is why I think he is contemplating leaving.

Which is exactly the type of desperation move people are scared of Feater making. i think that would be a horrible move for the Flames unless the bought so low you can't pass it up and I don't see that happening. Lecavalier still has some value.

I'm a loyalty first guy, I want nothing to do with him leaving and I'm personally not looking forward to thinking Iginla is a traitor for leaving Calgary. That's how my mind works and ill be pretty pissed off if he gives up on this team.

He's given his best years and efforts to this team for his entire career. Leaving wouldn't change that. Its time to let him go. He deserves it. Iginla isn't responsible for running this team and its up to those guys to fix it, not him.

He has had a few contracts with the Flames. Outside of two years the Flames have been nothing special. He could have left the last two times he was to become a UFA. Or, he could have requested a trade at anytime. He has decided to stay in Calgary despite never being a contender. Makes me think he is ok with it.

That's a pretty odd attitude. Giving up on this team? Where have you been for the last 3+ years VFF? It's over man, the window is long gone.

I think he genuinely wanted to win here. Its hard to give up on that. Iggy has been a loyal player to this franchise. The truth is now dawning on everybody, including him.

I am a Flames fan and not a player fan. As long as the team is moving forward taking positive steps, I really don't care who comes and goes.
I would bet there are many fans who share VFF's opinion and many who share mine. Ultimately the only opinions that matter belong to Edwards, King, Feaster, and Iginla and I have no idea what is going to happen next; I wouldn't be comfortable placing a bet on an educated guess.

How many years does Iginla have left in the tank? 4? 5? Another Teemu Selanne like 7+?
I don't doubt for a second that Iginla settles in Calgary long term after his hockey career is over, but who's to say he doesn't do 2-3 years elsewhere and return for a swan song season in Calgary?
So many people seem to want to apply either the Bourque or Sundin narrative to Iginla when really those are the extremes (great success on one end, nightmare on the other) when really this could play out in a number of ways.
Obviously I'd like to see Iginla retire as a Flame, but I'd also like to see him get his name on the cup, but the two events are not mutually exclusive, nor are either guaranteed.

I would give Iginla 5.3 over 3 years. I am just not so sure he accepts that. 6 mil the first year and 5 mil in years 2 and 3 doesn't seem like that bad of a deal given his point totals and years of loyal service.
