I was looking at getting this game, but based off of the recent reviews, etc. I'm not too sure.

What are your guys opinions? Are they fixing some of the problems? Is they game becoming better to play since release? Or does it seem to be going further downhill and not much hope for improvement?

It's not becoming better, it's just becoming more accessible. We have to wait and see if it'll become better.

My opinion? Hold off until a sale which I'm sure will come soon.

I am enjoying it despite the issues. I haven't had a problem logging on in a while, and the traffic management problem is annoying but can be overlooked. The small city size plots is difficult so maximizing space used is a requirement.

I am working on a education city to start off my region and have found a really nice design to my city that is working quite well.

Like cities that are more than an hour old?

The earthquake didn't end up hurting me that bad in the end.

-Firstly, some bug somehow caused my mansion to be undestroyed. Still had to take a loan to fix my street car station and house.
-prior to the quake, I had built a trade depot, allowing me to sell my alloys, metals, plastic and processors on the global market. So even though I lost 15k in population and I'm running an hourly deficit, the profit off those were huge enough to pay off my debt fast and make a healthy profit.

So I wonder why I was having problems even on 4? Weird.

So have most of the issues been fixed now? Do you guys find it annoying having to have your cities played online? I'll most likely purchase after the game appears stable.

I haven't been able to play on any server in two days now.

I haven't had any problems since the first few days. Besides the early server issues I haven't noticed the online play that much. I thought I would hate the region play but I think once they sort out some AI issues with people traveling it will actually be a lot of fun to control a few different areas working together.

Wow that's brutal! I guess I'll wait a bit then. I still hate the online idea but that is most likely the inner old man coming out in me.

Looks like they released an update this morning or sometime today. Looks like 1 of the 2 major issues that I had has been fixed.

Education "sharing" or "traveling" has been fixed and if you have 1 city that is heavy in education, sims from another city will travel to get an education. T

The other major issue I have had was power buying. I have a nuclear power plant in city B and my plan was for the other city to buy 100% of its power from that city. It shows that I am buying from city B but I am not getting any power.

the Maxis guys who said they were able to get a city population up to a million had to have been full of ####. i get to about 150k before my space is maxed out and i'm crippled by traffic. i don't even know how people are getting up to the quarter million mark, all my stuff is high density and i can't grow it anymore

I think the trick there is to leverage the regional aspects of the game. Rely on other cities for things like power, water, industrial jobs, etc. The less supporting infrastructure you house, the better.

The other problem is the pathfinding is REALLY broken in the game.

I decided to try out an electronics-producing city which had some hilarious moments. I started off mining coal and iron to get some capital (and to later use smelters to create alloys for processors) but I transitioned into electronics a bit too early. I had to borrow 100k from all three bonds and was teetering on bankruptcy for (real life) hours because I needed to purchase alloys and plastics. The fact that I had terrible traffic jams pretty much locked down my shipping trucks didn't help.

I ended up blowing up half of my residential / industrial and all of my commercial buildings to alleviate the roads and then an earthquake hit what was left of my residential zones. My net income was somewhere in the -23k/hour range.

I finally leveled off and started making some good cash, my city is now earning roughly 3 million every "month" but my city is a complete wasteland that is dotted with electronic factories and trade ports.

Think I should ask for the other 18 cents back? Must have something to do with the exchange rate or something.
