Refund update:

I know some of you are probably sick of hearing about it, and I'm not trying to pile onto the "SimCity hate machine", but I received a final confirmation email today about my refund.

Spoiler!

I've checked my online MasterCard transactions, and all I can see is the purchase right now. I believe there can be up to a 3 day delay in showing new transactions. So I'll check in a few days for the refund.

Hopefully those of you that are looking for refunds, get it.

And like I said, if things stabilize, get better and some of the issues are dealt with, then I can see myself picking up SimCity again.

I'm glad to read that some of you are still having fun with it.

Just for reference, I was skimming through the Diablo 3 thread here, and by the end of Day 2 it appeared that everyone was able to get on and play with only minor interruptions. By Day 3 I couldn't find any posts complaining about servers.

I remember there being some hiccups in the week or so after launch, but after day 3 they weren't very common.

I'm enjoying SC so far, though I've only spent about 6 hours on it. Regional play with my wife is very fun, but frustrating when we can't log in together.

I don't mind the small city size so far, but I never really was a power builder in the old sim city games.

Play time for me is 2 hours, and not for a lack of trying

i don't think i've ever seen this before. EA stops SimCity advertising campaigns, asks affiliates to stop actively promoting the game

So along with Amazon putting up a warning, and all the poor reviews, this can't be good.

Jebus...what a cluster...

Couldn't happen to a nicer company.

Apologies to all the Maxis/EA/Bioware staff caught in the crossfire, but I'm kind of enjoying this.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

If you are looking for an alternative to SimCity, apparently Tropico 4 is a pretty decent game in this genre. I've never tried it myself.

Steam has it on sale for 75% off.

a thousand times this. EA is total garbage and their abuse of their employees and their customers is resounding. They deserve every bit of this and more.

Tropico 3 was a lot of fun. It has a similar concept to SimCity. Your island has actual citizens who get jobs, live in the houses you build and rebel against you. It's cool too because your population starts off uneducated so you can hire foreigners to come teach in your schools or run clinics.

Tropico 4 isn't very different from 3, especially the graphics, but it's still worth playing if you're a fan.

I like how there are various factions you need to keep happy. For example, If you build a mine the capitalists will like you but the environmentalists will complain.

It's a fun, under-rated game, and at least it works.

Lucy Bradshaw, General Manager of Maxis:

Quote:
Here’s a quick update on the problems we were experiencing with SimCity – and a little something extra for people who bought the game.

The server issues which began at launch have improved significantly as we added more capacity. But some people are still experiencing response and stability problems that we’re working fast to address.

So what went wrong? The short answer is: a lot more people logged on than we expected. More people played and played in ways we never saw in the beta.
OK, we agree, that was dumb, but we are committed to fixing it. In the last 48 hours we increased server capacity by 120 percent. It’s working – the number of people who have gotten in and built cities has improved dramatically. The number of disrupted experiences has dropped by roughly 80 percent.

So we’re close to fixed, but not quite there. I’m hoping to post another update this weekend to let everyone know that the launch issues are behind us.

Something Special for Your Trouble

The good news is that SimCity is a solid hit in all major markets. The consensus among critics and players is that this is fundamentally a great game. But this SimCity is made to be played online, and if you can’t get a stable connection, you’re NOT having a good experience. So we’re not going to rest until we’ve fixed the remaining server issues.

And to get us back in your good graces, we’re going to offer you a free PC download game from the EA portfolio. On March 18, SimCity players who have activated their game will receive an email telling them how to redeem their free game.

I know that’s a little contrived – kind of like buying a present for a friend after you did something crummy. But we feel bad about what happened. We’re hoping you won’t stay mad and that we’ll be friends again when SimCity is running at 100 percent.

SimCity is a GREAT game and the people who made it are incredibly proud. Hang in there – we’ll be providing more updates throughout the weekend.

If it's any game from their library I think that's a good payoff - I'd take a free game for a week delay post purchase imo.

Maybe it's because I rarely play video games, but this whole thing seems overblown to me.

it's not just the servers, there are fundamental problems with SimCity that go beyond online play. for example, the path-finding is completely broken. are you wondering why you have severe traffic issues no matter how you try to fix it? it may be due to the fact that sims will always take the shortest path regardless of the size of the road

even when traffic is backed up to a standstill, they'll still take the shortest route and leave alternate routes empty
