We'll make the playoffs when we deserve to be there. The division we're in is irrelevant.

Yeah. The "OMG, some teams in our division are very good right now, so we'll never sniff the playoffs ever again" is a rather bizarre line of thinking. It is reminiscent of that St. Louis Post Dispatch writer (Jeff Gordon?) who said the Flames would never make the playoffs ever again, about two years before we made them five years in a row.
Anyway, looking at the map, I realized that the divisions are pretty much aligned for an expansion run to Hamilton and Quebec City. If the league does go down that route, Tampa and Florida are easily switched to that Central Division with Colorado sliding to the Pacific.

Teams in the seven-team divisions (Pacific and Midwest) will play 32 out-of-conference games, 21 games against teams in the other division within their own conference, plus 29 games against teams within their own divisions.
Teams in the eight-team divisions (Atlantic and Central) will play 28 out-of-conference games, 24 games against teams in the other division within their own conference, plus 30 games against teams within their own divisions.

So the Pacific and Midwest will have to take one more trip (2 more road games) out east, than the East teams have to travel out west.
Detroit finally gets its wish. Toronto fans and mainly media bitched and complained for years about playing in the West, playing Montreal/Ottawa only twice a year, and late games on road trips, (except for spring 1993 when there was a couple days when it looked like they could play MTL in the SC Final), and finally got their wish 15 years ago.
I thought at the time, it was promised to Detroit that they would be the next move to re-ignite regional rivalries, get the better travel sked etc etc, and sure enough...

Anyone hear anything about how the scheduling will work? All I've read so far is home and away games for every inter conference matchup in the regular season

We have better odds in the west to make up for the uneven travel schedule. Seems fair.

It really sucks for the Western Conference teams that just as Detroit is finally falling back to mediocrity, they are moving to the East...

Congrats to NHL West teams. With the NHLPA saying yes to realignment, you will have a 7% better chance of making playoffs than East teams.
|
Wrong. 57% chance is 14% better than a 50% chance.

An average team in the West will make the playoffs 4 years out of 7, whereas average in the East gets you in 4 years out of 8. There's nothing wrong with this line of thinking. It's unbalanced. I'm not complaining, since the Flames are in the West, but I don't see how the Eastern teams or their players could have signed off on this plan.

Right on. The balance schedule could happen under the current format.
other conference 15x2
other divs in conference 10x4
other teams in the div 4x5 or 4x6
That would have made 80 or 84 games but butthead bettman can't figure that out.

this step just seems odd to me if they envision teams in Quebec city and Markam Ontario at some point. That would move the East to 18 teams, and then what?
Detroit, Columbus and another team back? That's messy
I wonder if they'll go to a six division format again and start grouping quadrants. Hard to say

Because teams make the playoffs based on number of wins an OTLs- not by chance.
Look at the Flames and their standings right now; sitting in 12th. Are we looking at the teams behind us? Not really- we are looking at the teams ahead and how we can make up ground.
8 teams in one division means there will be one more team in each division who wasn't good enough to make it. It doesn't matter if there are 8 or 7 teams; if you don't have enough points to crack the top 4 you aren't in the playoffs.
Compare that to the way it is now. We play most of our games against division rivals; however the playoffs are based on conference standings. So if you are in a weak division you have an easier time making the post season.

Well I am extremely happy we are getting the divisional playoffs back. I always believed that rivalries are built through the playoffs and the prospect of playing EDM, VAN, and LA in the playoffs every year is very appealing. I am not a fan of the wild card though.
What I would have liked to see is the conference idea abolished or have 4 conferences. I liked the idea of the 4 division/conference winners to play randomly with the winners meeting for the cup.
But I will take this. It is better than before.

I hate it. Divisional playoffs are good, but everything else about this stinks.
