Glendale city manager is likely to resign
http://www.azcentral.com/community/g...nclick_check=1
Glendale acting City Manager Horatio Skeete is expected to resign his position as the city’s top administrator following a performance review conducted by the City Council during an executive session Tuesday.
The council members were mostly split on the positions: Weiers, Norma Alvarez and Ian Hugh supported Skeete and opposed Tindall. Vice Mayor Yvonne Knaack, Manny Martinez and Gary Sherwood opposed Skeete and supported Tindall.
Council member Sam Chavira said he opposed both.

Enough of this already. Why can't NHL just say enough is enough....we don't want to put anymore money on this terrible franchise. The team does not make any money, not a lot of people would want to watch a boring hockey team on a sunny day. If you watch the stand, most of the people on the stand are probably from out of town watching their favorite team playing against the Coyotes.

I would argue that nobody knows why they are still in Phoenix.
I think the Coyotes are still in Phoenix because of the Chewbacca business plan.

Why would a Wookiee -- an eight foot tall Wookiee -- want to live on Endor with a bunch of two foot tall Ewoks?
But more importantly, you have to ask yourself: what does that have to do with the Phoenix Coyotes? (calmly) Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense!
Look at me, I'm a lawyer and commissioner of a major sports league, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca. Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense. None of this makes sense.
And so you have to remember, if Chewbacca lives on Endor, the Coyotes must stay in Phoenix! Bettman... OUT!

The Coyotes are still in Phoenix because the NHL has absolutely zero options. Jamison couldn't raise the money, and no one else will buy the team because the Glendale lease prevents the buyer from moving the team without paying a massive penalty. The league can't fold the team because that would cost more than keeping it afloat due to the aforementioned arena penalties and the lawsuits that will inevitably be thrown at the NHL.
Basically, the NHL dug itself into a s**thole which it now can't crawl out of.

The Coyotes are still in Phoenix because, until this season, someone else was paying the lions' share of the losses. That gave it time to see if an interested party could save the market. The league didn't fold the team because they don't want to fold teams. There's no point when they can relocate it if circumstances dictate. And that is the point we are pretty much at. The owners were fine putting a couple hundred grand each into this, knowing they were going to get it back on the sale and the expansion frenzy created in places like Quebec City. But they aren't going to accept seven figure losses each going forward.

Well, there is one thing they could do.
They could lower the price. You can always sell something for something if the price is right.
Instead, they keep raising the price.
There's not a lot of desperation there. The NHL isn't a "motivated" seller to date.
The NHL has a certain input cost and it wants it back. Unfortunately, it appears it can only accomplish that goal by selling to another city.
Or . . . . the NHL can decide Phoenix is important to the long-term plan and bite the short-term bullet, taking the short-term hit and lowering the price to make the math work for a greater array of suitors.

The one thing the bankruptcy did for the NHL is that the lease was broken with Glendale. They now operate on temporary leases so the NHL can move the team anytime it wants to after a season is completed, with no penalty. It's even in the Coyotes season ticket agreement where they'll give a refund if the team is moved. Why they haven't done so is perplexing and is why it's speculated that Bettman has a personal interest beyond a dollars and sense reason.

It's not perplexing why the team hasn't moved to date. Someone else was always covering the losses of the team.
That's changed now, and why I suspect that the team will be somewhere else for the 2013-14 season.

The COG has been covering part of the losses ($25M) but I've read the losses have been $30M to $40M/yr. The team hasn't made a profit in all it's years in Phoenix, so it's been throwing good money after bad.
You're right though, the subsidy has stopped but why this money losing soap opera has been allowed to go on for years is the question.

team loses money because they have not been marketed correctly -
they just need to hire a marketing wizard and give him a large marketing budget -

Canada group eyes Phoenix bid
http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/91...on-source-says
Canadian financier George Gosbee emerged Thursday as part of a group of fellow Canadian investors who hope to close a deal to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes from the NHL for $170 million as early as next week, a source told ESPN.com.
Canadian investment banker and financier Gosbee represents a small group of investors to join forces with another Canadian businessman, Anthony LeBlanc. LeBlanc and his partners have been trying to take control of the Coyotes for three years in an effort to bring to a close the team's long ownership saga, a source told ESPN.com.
The group hopes to close the deal as early as next week after which they would work with the City of Glendale to hammer out a new lease agreement at Jobing.com Arena where the Coyotes play.

I'm in the same boat, but the goal seems to be that buying the team first is #1 then work out the lease.
This is a legit bid from what i'm hearing locally. This isn't new to me.
