I'm sorry, but you are off your rocker. Thanks for your opinion, you don't like reddit, don't go there. Let the rest of us make decisions on our own

I went to Reddit once because everyone made it sound like the place to be on the internet. One look at the ######ed layout and that was it.

I'm looking over at the banner ads on this site and I see a promo for designer brand name glasses.
Now forgive me if I am wrong but I bet a few of these designer brands have/or had issues regarding child labour practises.

I'm most fascinated by people complaining about reddit's layout. It is just so damn clean and simple to use, I can't imagine what people find difficult about it.

On a related note, I used to browse reddit with most of the default subreddits. Complete waste of time. As sort of a new years resolution, I threw out all the stupid subreddits (like funny, pics, atheism), and added some useful ones like science, askscience, lifehacks, youshouldknow, loseit).
I now find that I waste a lot less time looking at memes, and more time learning new things and improving myself. So, if you browse without an account, or haven't really customized the default subreddits, just a suggestion to give it shot.

Never even realized how that worked. If I could get rid of a ton of that crap, it might actually be productive for me to visit more often.

As a lurker, this was the only reason I bothered creating an account at all. Being able to unsubscribe from most of the default subreddits and being able to add a few of my favourites to my own custom front page is an invaluable feature.

I'm not a fan of reddit, but how can someone cite gawker.com in a morality discussion with a straight face?

Facebook groups of strip clubs and escort services in the interior of BC, Vancouver and on Vancouver Island routinely scan and proposition hundreds of teenage girls through their highschool profiles to work in the industry.
The police are well aware of it as is facebook.

The point isn't that one site condones it and the other doesn't, it's that both massive communities generating lots of money for the main domain and periphery sites don't give a shart about things unless it adversely affects their bottom line.

One thing is certain for me. If we are going to use CP as the short form of CalgaryPuck then people need to avoid using CP as a short form of child pornography. It makes things very confusing for the casual reader.

Good thread, Psycnet. I didn't realise Reddit was condoning such activities. I applaud you for having a strong social conscious, but expecting everyone to align with your cause is a bit lofty.
Wal-Mart, NIKE, Starbucks; pretty much all mega-corporations abuse unequal overseas child labour laws.
Most Oil and Gas companies in Calgary probably don't give 2 cents if they hurt they environment if it helps their bottom line.
If Reddit is really that indifference / encourage shady behaviour, I'd put categorizse them similarly.
There are social injustices everywhere -- most of us don't do enough, or anything about it. Good luck in your cause. You should realise though, that even if the corporate face has a certain position, it doesn't preclude all of the honest, hardworking people related to that company, and that good can still arise from it.

Read your defense of using the Internet and found it lacking. As the backbone of the internet has companies that take Redits money, google allows searches of Redit and makes money from directing people to it. Shaws user base pay shaw to access Reddit and shaw allows people to access the Vile sub forums of Reddit. So many companies that you likely use directly or indirectly make a profit from Reddit. So through one more degree of separation you still support Reddit despite never going to the site.
Also when looking at the Internet itself you have to recognize that it has greatly enhanced the ability of people to share and disceminate all manner of vile content. If you disband the internet that content would be much less accessible to people. But that is not practical so the real question is does the internet provide more good than harm. That answer is obviously yes. So its use is reasonable. So the question must also be asked on Redit, does it provide more harm than good on balance. Does pushing these groups to a darker corner of the internet help or having them in public groups accessible by law enforcement actually shed light on perpatrators? Having not actual ventured beyond redits front page does redit allow private redits? I think like all things you must evaluate the benefit and the cost.
A final question, to you look at redit sourced or derived content? For example the funny pictures thread is essentially redit sourced as well as numorous news stories here. How many degrees of separation do you keep from them.

I have a finite amount of time to dick around on forums today, so I'll keep it brief.
a) you don't need to put 2 spaces after every sentence.
b) don't extrapolate that I want to 'disband the internet' (seriously?). I merely want Reddit to shut down and disavow themselves of their morally dubious content so I can enjoy it without feeling like a creep.
c) everything on Reddit is a repost of a repost, usually from 4Chan, SA, or blogs. I don't read the funny pictures thread here, because goons churn out more than enough amusing content for me to occupy myself with.
If you really want to defend Reddit's right to allow that content, stifle opinion, and basically abuse their internet clout, have at 'er.

Just the other day a friend said, "we need to ban CP!" I was furious, and responded with "I love CP, and use it daily, how dare you try to take that away from me!"

I went to FYAD once, probably around 2005 when I first joined SA. Let's just say it was the equivalent of opening a door, seeing the room and quietly backing out.
