Need extra money? Just convince some parents that their kid will be a twisted freak unless they get braces. I mean, the proof is right there is the x-ray.

Pay them what they quoted, espeically if there is a chance that you would have looked for something else if they would have quoted you the right amount.

I would pay a portion of it at least.

I was on the receiving end of something like this myself, and in my contract I pay for mistakes I make over a certain dollar amount out of pocket. It did not feel good writing a check to my employer for 3 grand and change. And the customer had no issues when he knew that was the case. He said.. "Too bad man". And in a lot of cases that is what is happening behind the scenes. I couldn't live with myself knowing someone who made an honest mistake was paying my tab, having been on the short end of that type of transaction.

That's a big gap. I wouldn't pay $6,000 especially since they quoted you $2,500. I might be nice about it and pay $3,000 otherwise I'll just pay $2,500 just the way they quoted you. I understand it is a quote and usually there was some writing on the Quotation Form that quote price is not a final price. There is a possibility it might be 5% or 10% higher but not 140% higher. That's ridiculous..Dental Office has to eat their mistakes and learn from it.

If they had brought it up before the final bill or if the final bill was within 20% of the quoted price I would pay the whole amount as the cost of things change.

Without notice plus a guilt trip I wouldn't pay any extra.

I don't want to derail this thread, but I bumped your old thread to ask for the rest of the story.

Whoops. I asked here at the same time because I didn't want to necro a thread. Your idea is better.

Maybe one of the lawyers can chime in, but I would be concerned about paying more than the original quote having the potential to be taken as you acknowledging the amount owed is higher. If you just pay the $2500 and they take you to court, the case seems simple. If you pay more, they now have a case that you agreed to pay them the new amount.

DAYS?!? Hahaha. minutes more likely.

I have just spent a TON of money on dentists. I do have a plan but the rates they charge for the services rendered are way out of wack. If there was no insurance their costs would have to come way down. It is a screwed system.

I had a crown installed this week. All the work was already done, the RDA took off the temp, cleaned the area and the dentist came in and glued it on. Total time in the chair was 15 minutes. $350 for this. That is $1400 per hour. I respect their education and their intellect but really? Outrageous. On top of it all they won't direct bill. So I have to have room on my credit card, pay it and wait for the cheque to come. Then take the cheque to the bank and deposit it. Small point but still a piss off. They get their money right away.

To the OP, they made a mistake, they eat it. In reality they are writing it off anyways. Not a penny extra.

If this was a neighbourhood mechanic scraping by or a small business or something I would probably be a lot more willing to at least cover the guys costs but not in this case.

I am surprised that no one has asked to define the so called mistake. If they gave the customer the wrong quote, I probably would balk on paying the higher amount. If the mistake (and I don't think they would have used those words...) was that they discovered more problems that they could not see via x-ray, than you should pay. As other people posted already, a single tooth can have multiple canals completed.

If you don't trust your dentist don't let them stick tools in your mouth.

As for that mechanic telling the customer they are going to eat the extra repair costs, that is often a big lie told to every customer in many types of business...build up trust so that you can nail the customer in the future.

Haha! I am a lawyer. I have to look down on someone!!

I respect dentists and think they deserve to be fairly compensated. I just think the insurance system and the related billing has run out of control.

I may consider meeting part way. They did make a mistake and you pay much less than you should have, but human error occurs. I wouldn't pay the full amount since the work was done with knowledge of what the original quote was going to be. If you are to dig your heels in to not pay anymore, it's reasonable though.
