Neither rivaled the loneliness and despair that was a SAAN's however.

In the town I grew up in, people were honestly excited when SAAN moved in. It was THE spot to go school shopping... especially after Woolworth's (and then Woolco) shut down. How sad it that?

You city people and your big fancy Zellers!

People in the town I lived in actually tried to block one of those "dollar" stores from moving in because it was going to be located just on the edge of town and business owners thought that it would stop people from shopping downtown. Seriously, how bad are the retail option when you have to worry about that.

Bah...retail for basic consumer good is dead. Now that they've invented this thing called the internet, hopefully I'll never actually have to step into one of these stores.

I agree with you, and I love shopping on the internet. But there is still something to be said about getting the product in your hands right away and not having to pay shipping.

Just be glad you had a SAAN. The town I used to live in had Red Apple as its main variety store.

Returns as well. You could say going to the store and then going back to return it is a hassle, but it goes along with the idea of getting the product/money back in your hands right away. A bit of piece of mind there.

SAAN has an interesting history. Makes a good read if you can find stuff about them.

When I run out of toilet paper I don't want to wait three days for shipping.

Same goes for tissues when I have a runny nose, any form of medication (except for headache medicine I don't buy medicine until I need it).

I buy salt for the driveway when I run out. I don't need the irony of the delivery guy slipping on my front step delivering the salt.

I buy garbage bags when I run out. I don't want to wait around with no bags.

If I am buying electronics like a TV or checking out a computer monitor I'd like to see it in person first. I don't want to buy it, look at it, send it back and then decide.

Lots of advantages to buy things in person. Let alone human contact, and getting exercise.

I'm not opposed to online shopping. In fact I do that for most purchases I need but not right away or I ca wait a few days for but will get more points by ordering online.

If there's a need for a Walmart then it should have legitimate competition, aka Target.

I liked to go there to shop for watches! Nothing like a SAAN store calculator watch.

I actually miss The Bargain Shop. I still remember the downtown location that is where Grand & Toy and the basement Dollarama are now. It was like a dollarshop that would have more than the normal made in China dollarshop goods because it was a liquidator for Woolco and I used to find cool stuff there. The Bargain Shop still exists and bought a hundred of the old SAAN stores. They also own Red Apple.

I haven't been to Army & Navy for years (loved the toy section as a kid) and still can't understand how it still exists. Then this is Giant Tiger. I don't know how that fits in but it seems to be doing alright.

I have a huge craving for chaotic liquidation stores but Giant Tiger and Army & Navy are too clean these days for that. They need to be in more shambles and have more ancient furnishings from the 60s-80s (Army & Navy used to have this).

I'm not getting the love for shopping online for the type of products they offer. Do you people have an easy way of receiving these online deliveries? Do you have a house and it just get's left there? Not a good option for me in a condo. I get enough hassle from my mail room at work for the electronics I get delivered at the office. I couldn't think of doubling or tripling it so I can get Brita filters and socks sent to me without stepping foot in the store.

That's depressing as the Carl's Jrs I have been to in the States have all been great, miles above BK and Mcdonalds.
