Related question: I was attending a 2 day course at SAIT this week and they too are holding the SU elections. One of the campaign posters was for a guy running for VP: Student Life. His slogan was "Make it cool. Make it seek.". What the heck does "make it seek" mean? Google has failed me, is it some new kind of lingo the kids are using?

I'll vote for the guy who promises to get a more fair deal for students. Also, lower tuition.

They talk about tuition and trying to keep it as low as possible. I can't remember 100% but I do know that they eliminated fees for something this year. Even if it was reduced by 40 dollars a student, that's a lot of money.
They control the food court and Mac Hall as well as the Store which I think is reasonably priced. That also allows for a lot of students to find work during the year and help out and make some money after hours.
They are responsible for the U-Pass as they are the ones that negotiate the contract
The VP external is responsible to meet with corporations and to provide us with funding (helping tuition) and scholarships
The VP academic takes care of how professors are doing their job and the USRI ratings decide a large portion of the salaries for professors.
The VP student life is pretty self explanatory. His job is to make the university experience more than just going to class and trying to succeed academically. They look after clubs and other events that being a part of really makes me realize that when I will be done my time here at the U of C, I will definitely have a lot of positives to look at.
They control the den and Thursden which is supposed to be very reasonably priced.
They sit on city council meetings (more for President) and make sure that the city is considering the campus for their decisions. For example, Hardave talked Nenshi out of a new transit route that would have really made it difficult for students just this year.
Like I said, they don't have too much power and they aren't all corporate people, however, they are a body that do look after students indirectly and something that we can use. More than just people sitting down and having parties at least.

Just as I suspected.
Useless.

Wow, what a great post without any arguments. I am not here to impress you but I would like to know how this pessimestic attitude has done for you career-wise.
I am suspecting you are one bitter fella who didn't even make it through university.

that and how they were willing to brazenly print anything without thought of consequences. like that one time there was some sex themed fair going on at MacHall and there was a student doing some stripper thing and she got published in the newsletter, bejeweled poon and all...thus ruining the lives of everyone involved.

The SU is in charge but really they can't do much more.
I know A & W has a clause for no other fast food restaurants to come in (burger places like McDonalds). They do have two Tim Hortons so that helped waiting times (in theory). They have Subway and Opa which always have a line up.
Lastly, the only other option left is Asian food places. Although I would like to say that the service needs to improve because places like Korean BBQ are losing a lot of customers while DQ does a fantastic job.
They are renovating Mac Hall so maybe with added space in the future we can see a lot more variety.
Last but not least, who doesn't love a Vietnamese sub for 6 bucks that's more than filling.

Overall, this was just a reminder to vote as I know how tough it can be from attending meetings and campaigning while attending classes. I am not here to argue about how great the SU is but I do feel they serve an important role.
Now that a lot of you dislike me for sticking up for them, I'll be sure not to ask for a Jihad next year as I stand up. Even though my campaign might be putting on Flames games on the TVs all around campus rather than those useless messages from the gauntlet

The A&W clause I guess I understand - they're probably paying a lot of money for that clause and really you don't need more than one fast food burger place.
Two Tim Horton's is great but I seriously think one should be coffee/donuts only and the other one should serve food. That would improve the wait times enormously, and open up half a stall for another vendor. How they didn't think of that when they opened it up is beyond me.
Opa's not bad but Subway is just garbage, plus the staff there are gross. I've been in there like 5-7 times in my 4 years at U of C and seen multiple food safety issues.

re: the asian places, this is exactly the problem.. Who needs 4 asian places that all serve exactly the same crap. Put some variety in there. Whoever approved that Curry Grill or "happy hut" as it's called now or whatever should be fired. It's a large space that could have attracted a legitimate vendor probably for a lot of money, but instead it's the same stuff over and over again.
Sure, maybe DQ does a good job of customer service but I'm not paying $5 for a small Blizzard and I'm certainly not eating DQ hot dogs for lunch.

I love a vietnamese sub as much as the next guy and Bake Chef isn't that bad, I guess - there's only so much a guy can take. But overall the quality in Mac Hall is just horrible. MRU has a Mucho Burrito! I want one too.
Does the Last Defence Lounge serve food? I've actually never been up there and now that I'm an alumni I might check it out.

Those are all valid points and I do agree with a lot of what you said about the Asian food places. MRU has gotten a lot of praise lately but really I think the current SU (which is what i meant by they can't do much more) has their hands tied with renovations etc.
I think their great idea for the two Tim Hortons was for one to only accept cash making it kind of an express line-up. However, I do agree that they could have thought of something different but just opening a second one was a difficult process. I say this because there are restrictions and both of them have the same owner, so maybe the decision was up to him on how he wanted to set the process up. As for DQ, I might be a different type of person than you but I value customer service because after working in retail, I know I put a tremendous amount of effort in keeping people happy with me. Yes, the LDL does serve food and they usually have a lot of deals as well. All of the profits are handed to the SU, which are then used in many different areas involving setting up for BSD.
No place is perfect and I agree there are some deficiencies in how the campus is being run but at the end of the day, I also don't think that the SU is completely useless.

I remember when I was at UofC, the SU staff threw themselves a houseboat party at the students' expense.

See, as I have said before that I am only a volunteer with them and want to finally campaign as only a VP, not the president next year. To be honest, I am not sure of the perks and what the SU does behind everyone and so your point may be valid.
However, personally for me, I would want to remove this Stigma as I do have a lot of great ideas that benefit the student body. As for the houseboat party, I could see if they were doing this every couple of weeks but once a year thing doesn't stress me out too much. Just like every organization, I feel they are entitled to have fun as many organizations do it from their profits (LDL and Den) or from tax payers (corporations).
This is just something I wanted to post about and now I realize how much of a bad reputation the SU actually has. I think there are a lot of stories out there that are not true as well I also believe some past members have really taken out the meaning of the SU.

As I tell my own students, in my experience, the SU is where GPAs go to die.
Also, do you think it is ethical for the SU to force students to pay a levy? Is that profit to you?

You couldn't be further from the truth.
Great work on management of the Mac Hall food court. The joke that operation has been for years should be enough to demonstrate the failure of the SU to manage anything. Years of blocking places students might like to eat at, and might actually turn a decent profit and increase lease rates... just to protect the crap that got to hang around for years and years for no good reason.

Why the #### did they move Tim Hortons from Science B to Mac Hall? And of all things put a Rogers in there to replace? All they did was move one lineup to another building that already has the store.
Makes more sense to have a Tim's in the Science complex than to put two of them right beside each other.
I'll join on the bandwagon on crappy foods. I do appreciate La Prep and Food for Gold as the recent new additions. Less crappy asian foods, more variety/healthy places!
