"Whatever happened was an accident," Dunton said. "If the case had gone forward, I know I would have been vindicated by a jury." Red-eyed but composed, Dunton, a paralegal for a law firm, said he would like to see a formal effort by industry officials to have alarm systems installed in vehicles. "I hope that the auto industry or the car seat manufacturers will have some kind of alarm or bell so [parents] won't forget their kid in a car," he said. Such technology is already being explored by carmakers.

Do we really need reminders that there is your child sitting in the back of your automobile. In all honesty that seems insane that someone could even forget their child. I do feel bad for the guy though, I don't know how I could deal with knowing that I had killed my child. This happens way to often though.

I absolutely think an alarm is a stupid idea. But man, I do feel sorry for that guy. If the kid was sleeping or he was on a big project at work and forgot I can see it happening. I can see why he tried to kill himself, can you imagine when you went out to the car and seeing your little baby dead, knowing it was ALL your fault. I don't even want to think about how I would feel.

This guy needs a big slap upside the damned head. If your daughter/son is sleeping, YOU JUST DO NOT forgot about them.
Its human nature to feel almost naked without your child around, especially if you are responsable for it.
Maybe he would like an alarm to tell him he deserves a beating every hour for the rest of his worthless life.

I do feel sorry for the guy, but regardless of how busy I am or how many projects I am managing at work, the first and last thought through my head is about my infant son. You can't "forget" that you have to drop them off at daycare. This just doesn't compute.

Ok Ok I am going to revise my position... Let companies install alarms in their car, but also get the alarm to send a signal to child protective services so they can remove the kid from your home.

I'd love to see his "alarm". What is it based on, weight on the seat? How could you prevent the alarm from going off if you have shopping bags (etc) there?
Stop protecting people from themselves. Put the responsibility where it belongs.

It would be nice to blame the automobile company, or the rat race - but it's not like this stuff happens to everyone. The guy needs to take full responsibility. I do sincerely feel sorry for him though. I couldn't imagine the kind of horror and grief he must feel.

Did it not say in the article that the moron <guy> was an attorney?
I think it was a pretty good cover up for not being thrown into jail, or losing his license. Nice touch on the grabbing an officer's gun as well. <Is that not a felony in itself?>
Who knows, maybe this kid was cramping his lifestyle and it was done on purpose?
Either way people like that should have to have to give up their left nut for being so dumb.

Exactly, there are too many warnings, inventions, and legal rules protecting people from their own responsibilities and allowing them to, as one of my teachers put it years ago, 'wallow in their own ignorance'.
God damn it people take some responsibility for your actions and/or get some common sense. Don't blame other for your own stupid or irresponsible mistakes. Man this just REALLY gets me!!!
Someone commented about the trunk releases being going to far. I get what you are saying, but I understand that one though. Often that's something kids do themselves. We all had our parents car keys when we were young, playing without our parents knowing exactly what was going on.
Leaving a infant or toddler alone though is inexcuseable. I'm not a parent myself but I know many people who are and I know how the safety of their child is something they are often OVER concerned about, never mind being able to forget about their child.
Shoot, even in my own life, I may not be a parent, but I have looked over people's kids, or much younger siblings, and the concern that I have for those children or babies, and the awarenes of what they are doing or what they need at any given moment is there and I'm not even the parent. For a parent to admit such a lapse is mind boggling.
This man should be done as Capt. says...

So your stating that he intentionally killed his daughter. Come on now that is a huge leap. Sure he was an idiot, but you know what, he likely was under a huge pile of stress and just plain forgot. Is that excuseable. Not really. But does that make him a murderer. I would hold off on making such claims until you have any proof pointing towards the fact that he did.

Next there will be an alarm telling females when they have low oil!!! oh wait, there is one but they don't listen to it anyways.
There's a limit to what we as humans will pay attention to. Too many warnings and we'll start ignoring them. Almost like the boy that cried wolf story. What kind of alarm would have gotten this fathers attention if he even forgot about his kid? Only thing I can think of is a loud car alarm style horn going off.

Fair enough, I may be jumping to conclusions here. But I guess it is just because I watch too much Law & Order.
You're giving me far too much credit to be thinking of this on my own. I just saw it on an old episode.
Just found this link which is somewhat related.

That is fairly uncommon though (children being abondoned) the only Canadian case I have heard about before this one you just posted was that of Ria Fuji (sorry if I spelt the bitches name wrong) who left her children in an apartment to die then got rid of the evidence (childrens bodies). While cases like these are shocking and disturbing it is important to remember that they are very rare, which is actually why they are shocking. However these are the stories which get reported in the media, and burned into our heads so whenever we hear of a child dying we immediently think of what you thought of in that the father murdered his child intentionally. But I do see where you are coming from.

Well, I remember my mom telling me stories when she just got so frantic with all that was going on around her that she forgot one of us but remembered a little while later. So it does happen, though the guy is a moron the alarm is a pretty good idea.
