Default U of C SU Elections

Hey guys,

I am not sure how involved people are with the elections but just a heads up that voting is now open and every candidate has put in a tremendous amount of effort in putting themselves out there. As a result, I hope those enrolled to spend five minutes and vote on your student centre!

I am not running this year but next year I plan on running for VP Academic. I am however a part of the SU volunteering team and it's just an amazing experience.

Btw candidates running for president this year:

Hardave - Can he be re-elected for his second term?
Stefana- She sure has support from a lot of people including cheerleaders asking for votes
Raphael - Previously VP external and did a great job!

Sorry, I know a lot of you do not attend U of C but a reminder for those of you who do!

Also a shout out to IMacPhail who is running for VP academic and she is a very good friend of mine!

The only time I ever voted in an SU election at UofC was the year The Rock got nominated. In Rock we trust!

If you do a jihad, ImacPhail will win cause of her name. With an all out battle vs Stefana.

I thought that the rock would have made a good SU pres. SU policy would reflect what was painted on the rock that week. It would have been a very direct form of demorcracy......or alot of drunken nights in the Den.

I don't know if things have changed, but when I attended U of C the SU may have been the biggest waste of time, and money, on campus.

I have heard a little bit about the rock but don't know too much about it.

Is it true that it actually won but then they gave it to the second place person? I have also heard of it only being a joke candidate like the red power ranger last year.

Haha that's true but I should keep the Jihad for myself next year and hope that I won't get the Michael Ha treatment.

I wanted to run for SU president with my platform being that I'd abolish the SU.

Yay, a bunch of guys that throw a fee on my tuition so they can go get drunk and camp in Edmonton... errrr... "protest tuition hikes".

Is Wannamaker running?
If not I don't see a reason to care.

As long as UofC doesn't elect anyone that robs banks it's fine. MRU on the other hand.

I guess there are a bunch of people that have no idea what the SU does and assume the wrong stuff.

Maybe look into what the SU actually does before ripping on it. I agrees that some things they do are useless but there is a lot that they do that is actually pretty important.

I'm 11 years removed from being able to vote, but if I could it would be for Stefana on campaign poster alone.

When I was apart of the SU I raised enough money for 2 scholarships and I threw a monthly student party... Good times.

Just dont elect anyone with a campagin or any thoughts of joining the CFS (canadian federation of students). It is a predatory organization that over charges students and promote adversarial options. It uses biased referendum questions to get students to approve to join and impossible requirements to be allowed to leave.

At the time the U of S Students union tried to join the CFS asked a referendum question of do you want to join the CFS, a national student lobby group, making no mention of the fee they charge per student to be in the CFS. Then they come in a spend big dollars campaigning, violate election rules, and then sue student unions whose election commisions try to overturn the results due to election violations and finally refuse to delist universities as members. They try to both run the referendum and campaign for the referendum.

http://www.studentunion.ca/litigatio...05-referendum/

Right now only Calgarys graduate student association is a member. Dont let the CFS near your university ask the presidential candidates about their plans.

They do have limited power but they are the mediating body between the students and the university officials that prevent them from doing whatever they want.

They talk about tuition and trying to keep it as low as possible. I can't remember 100% but I do know that they eliminated fees for something this year. Even if it was reduced by 40 dollars a student, that's a lot of money.

They control the food court and Mac Hall as well as the Store which I think is reasonably priced. That also allows for a lot of students to find work during the year and help out and make some money after hours.

They are responsible for the U-Pass as they are the ones that negotiate the contract

The VP external is responsible to meet with corporations and to provide us with funding (helping tuition) and scholarships

The VP academic takes care of how professors are doing their job and the USRI ratings decide a large portion of the salaries for professors.

The VP student life is pretty self explanatory. His job is to make the university experience more than just going to class and trying to succeed academically. They look after clubs and other events that being a part of really makes me realize that when I will be done my time here at the U of C, I will definitely have a lot of positives to look at.

They control the den and Thursden which is supposed to be very reasonably priced.

They sit on city council meetings (more for President) and make sure that the city is considering the campus for their decisions. For example, Hardave talked Nenshi out of a new transit route that would have really made it difficult for students just this year.

Like I said, they don't have too much power and they aren't all corporate people, however, they are a body that do look after students indirectly and something that we can use. More than just people sitting down and having parties at least.
