Top right of your screen on the main menu, there is a button that looks like an open envelope for game invites. Once you get invited I think it shows up there.
Also make sure you are on NA West 1 server.

In my defense, I have excellent crime, fire and pollution prevention. However, traffic causes all 3 to collapse  . The cities really need more than one road connection point to the region.

I actually don't have much in the way of any problems.
But thanks to my piss-poor planning, I seriously doubt I'll go past 50K Sims...

if you actually watch some of the routes the sims take you quickly realize why traffic is so messed

So apparently which server you choose, is where all your saved maps are. Huh. Not sure why I didn't clue in as to why I lost all my work from yesterday.
Or is there another reason when I quit the game all my stuff is gone?

You get 10 regions per server. They are each unique environments.
You can't abandon a city and restart from scratch but a city can always be saved. Infusions of cash or use of bonds.
