I think what people are suggesting is that the Avs somehow blackmail the Flames to make a different trade that highly favors the Avs.
No way would that be allowed to happen.

I could see Colorado thinking about not matching in light of this story. Even if they don't get first crack at ROR on waivers. They would have to belive that our pick will be a top 5 without ROR in our lineup. It could be worth it for them.
Man would that suck

The new CBA keeps that rule, with the noted exception for signing your own RFAs. I'm not sure how Calgary could argue that the new exemption would apply to them.

You can't really point at a previous agreement as an interpretation of a new agreement. I don't see the language as written as being that clear, there's at least an argument to be made.

If I was a shareholder in the Avalanche then I would demand as part of the organization's responsibility to extract maximum value at any time of perceived leverage. That would be the only ethical thing to do.

It's not meant to excuse ineptitude.
In fact, it's quite the opposite.

Kypreos just said nobody can get a hold of Sherman OR Feaster. But there's rumors the Avs haven't even formally done whatever it is they need to do and could foreseeably re-nag here its a total trainwreck they are having a field day!!!!!

Has anyone considered perhaps Feaster knew Sherman would match?? If there's a follow-up deal involving the Flames and Avs, then it would look like this was a planned occurrence... I'll wait a few days or so before passing judgment.

Maybe the Flames have a handshake deal with ROR that after he gets claimed, he bolts to Russia, plays a game then comes back.
Then he would have to clear waivers again, and we would have first dibs.
Disaster averted! Amirite? Guys?

No we're not. They've already announced their intention to match. From Colorado's viewpoint, they were willing to keep the player at $5m aav rather than take the first and third round picks. The waiver nonsense on our end does not change the result on their end. Either they are willing to take the player or they are willing to take the picks. They've already shown they want the player.

Why would Colorado not match now? Their only play would be to make Calgary give up more to trade for his RFA rights. Otherwise they lose him to the BJ's just to screw over the Flames

Our 1st with ROR would be much more likely to be a worse pick then our 1st without ROR and therefore, it might change their mind.

Enough with the "Avs haven't officially matched" drama.
Their GM held a press conference announcing to the world they were matching. I can't see any scenario where the NHL wouldn't consider that as binding on the Avs.
