Why would he leave money on the table?

And he inherited most of the good crap he had in Vancouver with the exception of the revolving door of crap goaltending.
I like Feaster in Calgary but I think I'd like Burke even more. Fun times.

O'Reilly's agent also an idiot for letting him play after the season started. I'm a little surprised the media didn't get on this weeks ago about anyone giving O'Reilly an offersheet would have to put him on waivers. Would have resulted in him signing a lot earlier I'm guessing.
As inept as I think Feaster is, nobody else seemed to know what was going on. That said, Feaster is the biggest moron here because he is the one who would have given up the picks and signing money.
O'Reilly wins big but could have gained a lot less if more people knew what was going on.

Then of course you're trying to convince O'Reily to not take his bigger new NHL salary.
Just a debacle of epic proportions.

And then the PA files a grievance like in the Scott Gomez situation.
You can't just force a player not to play.

It'd be one thing if this was just a terrible move (like a trade), but this is just straight up incompetence. The level of desperation makes me think he already had one foot out the door, but this should make it a no doubter. He could have set the Flames back 5+ years if this happened.

So you'd also have to convince O'Reilly to give up $1M (or whatever prorated) in salary? That would seem like a hard sell considering he's already given up half the season for money. I'd imagine the NHLPA would also get involved if the Flames tried to pull something like this.

Without a doubt. What almost happened is inexcusable and someone needs to lose their job in order to save face. This is embarrassing on so many levels.

Makes a guy like Darryl look Einstein-esque, going the safe route and signing those veteran grinders for picks!

I had only read the tweet from the Sportsnet reporter I had never even heard of before. Just saying there should be a link in the OP and that I would have liked to read it.

Did he actually play though? It is the KHL, not sure how accurate their lineup cards are

Ouch. I actually didn't mind Feaster before buuuut this is pretty much impossible to defend.
How can you miss something like this as an NHL GM? I don't think there's any way O'Reilly would have cleared wavers. Embarrassing.

This is a fail on so many levels. I want consequences, and not just for Feaster - everyone involved in that fiasco should be held accountable.

The only comparable I can come up with is when Chicago messed up on their key RFAs, forcing them to have to trade some guys they didn't want to. That blunder may have cost them a cup or two.
And if memory serves it pretty much did cost Tallon his job no?

He wouldn't. There would have been no logical saving grace for us. We would have immediately become the #1 laughing stock in the NHL. The Oilers and Islanders would have been very pleased.
The sad thing for me is I like Feaster, but this is just unforgivable that this could have happened. If the Avs waited until this morning after the story broke, it could have been a very long week for us.

Calgarypuck should be selected as the new GM. Crowdsourcing is really popular these days (Google does it), and apparently we know everything about every player.
We'd have the best team the Internet ever built. George Bush would be proud.

Yes. This kind of incompetence cannot be tolerated at the NHL level.
