I know it's wishful thinking, too much money is made during the playoffs.
How bush league was 16/21 though? That's worse than the CFL!

I am not bothered by the uneven playoff chances really. Soon enough I think they will expand to 32 teams and it will all be even again.

I like the head start because it makes the regular season more important. In today's NHL 1st overall plays 8th in the conference and they only advantage they have is game 7 at home.
It shortens the playoffs and immediately starts with a desperation Game 2.

That's a good enough advantage, and the owners would prefer it that way.
Playoffs are a huge revenue generator for the home team. You want to take one home game (game 1 or game 5) away from the better team? They would NEVER go for that. As well the lower seeded team will want their two games if they get it as well. They'll want that revenue.
Considering that, they wouldn't want 5 game series anyway then. They want to get as many games in as possible.

It's silly that this isn't done. Leave it to the NHL and PA to get nothing done of course.

Congrats to NHL West teams. With the NHLPA saying yes to realignment, you will have a 7% better chance of making playoffs than East teams.

And to be clear, NHLPA has consented to exactly the configuration proposed by NHL, so 16 teams in East, 14 in West, playoff wild-cards, etc

This is horrible. I watched Chicago vs. Detroit on the weekend and it was incredible hockey. It's terrible for the league that this rivalry can't continue. Why Detroit feels as though they have "paid their dues" is beyond me.

Makes me think that if PHO moves, the NHL prefers keeping them in the West.

It will still be harder to make the playoffs in the West

This whole line of thinking would only make sense if the playoffs were determined by a random draw. It will still depend on the quality of the teams in each division.

Poor Islanders fans. Their team may never make the playoffs again.

I don't understand why the players are bitching about the uneven playoff chances. If I remember, the east has more teams in it. But they play in the east. So travel is much less of a factor. It's not even anyway, why should the western teams have to travel ten times the distance an eastern team does, but have the same chances of making the post season.
Get it done, people.

ignoring quality of teams (which will vary over time), every Western team will have a 57% chance of making the playoffs, while every Eastern team will have a 50% chance of making the playoffs.
In the current setup., all teams have a 53% chance of making the playoffs.
