We are officially the Kevin Lowe run Flames, what a joke. Good job improving a divisional rival.

We couldn't have made it much higher because the compensation would have included a 2nd round pick (which we don't have).
Unless we offered $8.5 million per season, in which case it would be four 1st rounders.

Then you don't put in the offer at all. All we did was give the Avs their best player back ASAP. We did them a huge favor.

I wouldn't say they improved because they are paying him more than they wanted to and will likely have to unload a player or two over the summer.

Improving them is a stretch given that they spent considerably more money for him than they would have otherwise and he isn't exactly in positive favor with the organization right now. One way or another, the Avs were going to get something whether O'Reilly, players in a trade (prior to offersheet), or draft picks. The result of today for the Flames is that the Avs spent more than they wanted to on a situation they managed poorly.

I would have preferred that in the first place. What needs to happen now is someone needs to take away the keys from Feaster and King for the weekend so they don't go crazy with plan B.

I would think the goal was to try and get the ever elusive 1st line center.

I got to agree this hurt the Avs. They could have signed him to this same offer 3 weeks ago if it is what they thought was best for their organization. We helped them in the short run, but hurt them long term. Especially the QO effect.

I say kudos to Feaster for at least trying to address our brutal center situation. Clearly he's serious about improving this team, and I like that.

how?
they ended up paying him more than they wanted to, and have to in years 3/4 after the 2 year deal as well

There are plenty of ways to get around tampering, guaranteed the Flames will let it slip indirectly to Getzlaf's agent that they would love to have him in Calgary.
That's probably the next move. Hoping that the Flames don't now trade that 1st for a player inferior to O'Reilly in desperation.

Well, the Avs get him for the same price we were going to and keep their 1st rounder. If it is a bad deal for them, it was a terrible deal for us.

I thnk Feaster has a back up plan in place. Just cannot got out and swing for one without having something to back up on if the try failed.

What're you talking about? The messier signing was horrible for the Rangers. They didn't make the playoffs any of the years he was there after they signed him as a UFA. He even guaranteed that they'd make the playoffs and no one ever brings up that failed guarantee.
