Default Obama urges court to overturn California same-sex marriage ban

I wonder how we'll look back upon this discussion decades from how.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/28/politi...html?hpt=hp_t1

In a bold political and legal move, the Obama administration formally expressed its support for same-sex marriage in California, setting up a high stakes political and constitutional showdown at the U.S. Supreme Court over a fast-evolving and contentious issue.
In a broadly worded legal brief that senior government sources said had President Barack Obama's personal input and blessing, the Justice Department asserted gay and lesbian couples in the nation's most populous state have the same "equal protection" right to wed and that voters there were not empowered to ban it.

"Use of a voter initiative to promote democratic self-governance cannot save a law like Proposition 8 that would otherwise violate equal protection," said the brief. "Prejudice may not however be the basis for differential treatment under the law."

I know how I think about it in the present: It's ######ed that it's even an issue.

Tell that to all the idiots in Canada who are lobbying the Harper gov't to repeal gay rights here.

So stupid. I still haven't heard a decent argument from that side of the isle why something that doesn't affect their life is something they want to fight so hard against.

All of them? They are a real small majority are they not? Isn't the national average around 85% in favor now. And of course, those that are actively trying to change any laws, make up a small number of the part in which they poll. (The 15% for example, assuming that number is close)

There was that story about that assmunch in Sask the other day, but I get the feeling these nutjobs and groups are rather isolated and don't have any real numbers or power.

EDIT: Just did a quick search. Apparently it's 66% in favor. But I haven't heard of any real backlash in the six years it's been legal here.

There is no government current or future that's going to reopen that.

I don't even think it's an issue for anyone really. I spend quite a bit of time near the Parliament buildings and you can see anti-abortion activists making their presence known quite often, but I can't say I've ever seen anything from anti-gay groups here.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are on SNL this week. Quite the year for the Seattle duo. 21 Million hits for this video.

You make an absolutely horrible devil's advocate.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

That video linked by troutman is awesome. There is still soooo much homophobia in our society. It's imbedded in our language. Anything that we think is lame, or weak, or as the lyrics say, "lesser" - gets labelled as "gay". How about that Bill Burr video I saw in the Funny Videos thread? I can't find the original but here is the bit:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LRcmg9mxRQ
How much of what we guys do is to avoid being labelled that awful, evil "gay"? Even those that claim not to hate homosexuals will do everything in their power to avoid appearing gay.

Thinking back on the 80's.... I proudly claim that I was wearing a "Straight but not Narrow" button on my backpack in high school.... when it certainly was NOT cool to support gay rights. That was the time of AIDS and rampant homophobia. But thinking back, maybe I shouldn't be proud of wearing that pin. It said "I support gay rights.... BUT I'M NOT ONE OF THEM!!!!" Which, in itself, is hurtful.

How about:
"My book says it is an abomination."

I think that's the argument that is going to make this human rights issue fester longer than racial civil rights.

Although I obviously find California's same sex marriage ban to be offensive, I'm always a little uncomfortable when the executive puts pressure on the judiciary like this. This sort of thing would almost never happen in Canada in this day and age.
