Flames ownership won’t let him burn it down, so might as well just grab your guns and get aggressive…And, if you’re a Flames fan, it’s worth recognizing Feaster’s absolutely brutal draft history. Picks simply worth less with him in charge.
James Mirtle, Globe & Mail: About time a team gave O’Reilly an offer sheet. Makes no sense this doesn’t happen more often….Based on points percentage, Flames would have the ninth overall pick right now. Bigger problem is if they fall in standings….But O’Reilly is worth quite a bit more than a ninth overall pick. Can Avs move past the animosity that’s been created?
Pierre LeBrun, ESPN: Says a rival Western Conference team exec: “Avs will match for sure.” Well, we shall see …
Jesse Spector, The Sporting News: If I’m Greg Sherman, I say “thanks for the lottery pick and for screwing yourself more on the cap, Feaster!” and move on with my life….Maybe the smartest part of Feaster’s plan is avoiding ridicule for whatever he might have done with the first-round pick.
Bruce Arthur, National Post: It’s amazing the NHL doesn’t encourage more things like offer sheets to create player movement. Manufactures hot-stove debate and interest.
Hockey agent Allan Walsh: And of course, the offer sheet is somehow the greedy players fault, something players should be penalized for in the next CBA negotiation….Calgary’s owner was one of the primary advocates of a hardline against the players. Another “I just couldn’t control myself” moment?
Steve Simmons, Toronto Sun: Kudos to Flames GM Jay Feaster by signing Ryan OReilly to an offer sheet. At least he’s trying to make his team better.
Greg Wyshynski, Puck Daddy blogger: Let me get this right: Draft Pick X is better than retraining your leading scorer or getting known commodity?
Erik Erlendsson, Tampa Bay Tribute: The Flames want to pay Ryan O’Reilly $6.5 million in 2013-14? … That sort of contract makes agents around the league smile as it drives up price for comparables; nice to see the lockout already forgotten.

This just goes to show how utterly clueless and ill-informed most hockey pundits really are (aside from Mirtle) Bunch of blowhards. Would love to see them try to cope in a war zone, covering real news.
It's a great move by Feaster.

It's not a terrible contract.

So if they don't match, would that be some indication its terrible?
(FTR : I'm not saying it was a terrible contract)

Yes, I do think the Avs will jump at the chance to take the 1st round pick and avoid the nightmare of either qualifying O'Reilly $6.5M in 1.5 years or potentially losing him for nothing as a UFA. But it doesn't make any sense to "jump" today...it serves them much better to wait the full 7 days to keep a division rival from getting him early (and maybe help pile on a loss or two in the meantime to improve the draft position).

Only 34 players have ever signed offer sheets. 13 were accepted (pending the O'Reilly offer)
Some examples
-Stevens (accepted once, matched once)
-Graves (accepted)
-Selanne (matched)
-Vanek (matched, haha stupid Oilers)
-Sakic (matched)
-Fedorov (matched)
-Weber (matched)
Funny enough, Goulet was also offer sheeted by the blues. Chicago matched.

Deciding to match or not is still a risk/reward proposition and a bad contract is only one part of the equation. A team could easily feel it's in their best interests to match a bad contract because of the other aspects of the situation and that's what we've seen happen in the past.

I think they will match, so it's not easy for me to argue against that point.
If the Avs don't match, it will be for a combination of 2 reasons: they know they will be unable to re-sign him by July 1, 2014 due to the tear in the relationship, or because they believe the 1st will be high enough in the draft (top 10) where they believe they'll actually get good value in return.

I love that Roger still covers the Flames. This kind of tweet will have me twisting for a week regardless of the decision.

I was thinking more recently. The Kesler, Vanek, Weber, and probably Hjalmarsson deals were all bad contracts but were matched because the team felt the player was worth more than the assets they'd return.

We arent bad enough to draft top 5.
Iggy can be traded at the deadline for around the 20th overall pick and a prospect. Would you trade Iggy for O'Reily straight up? I would.
The value of this trade really depends on the risk of us giving up a top 5 pick. I think it is pretty low. If the pick is not top 5 this is a great deal if it is it may be a bad deal. Look at the Kessel trade. If the leafs finish 20th that year it turns out to be a really good deal for them. Even as it stands that deal isnt terrible.
The real question isnt what we paid to get him it is how does O'Reily develop. If he turns out like 80% of the 50 points at age 20 list than that is better than a 5% shot at Mckinnon.

The only reason they would keep him is to show other players that they will not be bullied.
It really sounds like O'Reilly camp and Av's camp do not like each other and i doubt it can be repaired. Do they want that nto spill over into the dressing room?
Also if they give in, Duchene and Landeskog have a huge leg up on the av's in their next negotiation.
