People are actually concerned about a $6.5M qualifying offer in 2 years? Do people even know how RFAs work?
If the Flames qualify ROR in 2 years, yes, it will cost 6.5M per season.
But you DON'T HAVE TO QUALIFY AN RFA. You can simply re-sign players. The Flames will NOT be forced to pay ROR 6.5M.
Remember how it would have cost $2.5M to qualify Comeau this summer? How come that never happened?
I hope ROR plays to the quality of a $6.5M player in 2 years time, so I'd have no issue giving him that.

That said, O'Reilly is absolutely not worth 6.5M and I would be surprised if he ever develops into a player that is worth that. He will be a very good NHLer but I don't see him with the offensive upside to be a #1C. Avs chose Landeskog over O'Reilly for captain, take the picks and run.
I would have to seriously consider getting an O'Reilly jersey if he does become a Flame

A fifty point 21 year old center who actually plays center isn't even scratching the surface of what he can accomplish in this league at this point. His cap hit will be 5m, they had to do something to prevent the avalanche from just matching it without question.

I added a poll.
Vote on what you think the Avs will do, not what you hope they do.

For all we know, the Flames made the offer a while ago and O'Reilly waited until now to accept it.

You don't become a 50 point player in the NHL at 22 and peak. Putting up 50 points at 22 and winning face offs means you're dealing with a number one centre.
Three years from now, when our centres are RoR, Janko, Backlund and Horak, we will be in the best shape we've been in 25 years.

People citing the incompetence of the Flames drafting as a legitimization for the offer sheet seems strangely alarming...

Yea. Guy that is holding out for more money will give the Flames a deal in his next contract and not see $6.8 as a starting point? Hahaha.
Good luck with that.
He'll have all the leverage. The Flames will have to offer him a QO because they gave up a first and third for 100 games of his play. If they don't he can walk and sign with whoever he wants.
If I were a Flames fan I'd be begging for the Avalanche to match this. $6.8 a season for O'Reilly is a terrible contract that will screw up their salary structure for years.

So if it turns out to be a top 5 pick, people will be pissed - naturally.
But what if the Flames make the playoffs - where would this move rank then?

Norm!

To me if the Flames get him, I see them competing for a playoff spot especially if Backlund comes back playing as well as he did we suddenly would have decent center strength and be very young up the middle.
Tanguay ROR Iginla
Glencross Stajan Hudler
Bart Backlund Stemp
Not bad scoring depth

C'mon now. He had one breakout season with 55 points. He had 26 points in both seasons prior that. Doesn't mean he's going to be a top line center and be able to produce those numbers consistently. He's a huge gamble at $6.5 million and at the cost of a 1st and 3rd round pick. Huge!

There is just no need for you to take the more unlikely outcome and cast judgement using it like it's factual.

Once again, I hope you're right and I'm way off on this one.

Good point by boomer, Flames may buyout someone this summer to get under the cap for next season.

Nope. Stajan is an easy trade with his improved play and front loaded contract. Bring Iginla back at a discount. We'd be set.

Better than having one natural centre in our lineup -as is- as we currently sit 3 points out of the playoffs?
Your attitude toward this move is a real shocker.

This is all about Iginla.
Right or wrong, the Flames/Feaster are still clearly thinking he can take this team to a cup. Hence why he's done this. If he didn't think so this trade wouldn't have happened.

This exactly falls in the line with the Flames mirroring the Leafs.

Vancouver Canucks also issued an offer-sheet but O'Reilly signed the Flames one instead.
Dan Tencer @dantencer
Sportsnet 960 Calgary reports that the Vancouver Canucks also issued an offer sheet to Ryan O'Reilly.

I agree.
As soon as Backlund is back, Stajan becomes a good trade candidate

Watching Dreger on TV, he sure sounds like he thinks the Avs will take the picks.
I think they'll take the picks as well. Guess we'll find out in a week.
