Add an energized Backlund, steady Brodie, and lots of other potential in our forward propsects and we do have lots to look forwards to.
Of course lots of other posters will say "But...but...THE TOP 5 PICK?!"

Interesting......if Avs match, they can't trade for a calendar year from today. That is after NEXT YEAR's trade deadline. Feaster with a brilliant move on that part.

He's going to be an elite two way centrmen in this league. The only question is where does his offence top out.
Personally, I think he can be a 60 point guy.

So let me get this straight...
People in the forums are excited about getting a player that put up 2nd line points at best one time in his career, paying him 6.5 million dollars, and giving up a 1st and 3rd round pick that most likely will be Jones, Drouin, MacKinnon, Barkov, etc?
So that would leave us with a 4th and 6th round pick this year?
I've never felt so frustrated as a Flames fan in my life. I'm so jealous watching these teams with young, homegrown, dynamic players putting in effort, and entertaining the fans night after night. I know I'm doing a bit of right now, but I'm feeling super p'd right now.

There's no way the pick will be a Top 5 pick, ownership has no desire to be that bad this year. Top 10 maybe, top 15 definitely, but not top 5.
Personally, I think this is a great move that addresses a long desired need. Although Reilly is not a #1 centre, Reilly, Backlund, Stajan and Horak look a lot better than what is there now. Plus, with how the Flames have historically drafted, why not get a proven 50 point player that is only 22, rather than someone that COULD be better?
On the other hand, if the Flames don't give him $6.5 million after the end of next year, we could be in the same situation in 2014....

Ermergerd. Saw my iPod light up with this and nearly had a heart attack. People can bitch about this all day long but this is a start to our center problem.

Michel Goulet strikes back at former employer:
Quote:
O'Reilly, a restricted free agent who led the Avs in scoring and the NHL in takeaways last season, will recieve a prorated $1 million salary this season, with a $2.5 million signing bonus, and $6.5 million next season.
The Avs have seven days to match the offer. If they don't, they will be compensated with Calgary's first- and third-round draft picks this summer.
Former Avalanche executive Michel Goulet, who is now working with the Flames, played a large part in the deal. Goulet is a Hockey Hall of Famer who spent the majority of his playing career with the Quebec Nordiques.
Goulet was fired by Avs president Pierre Lacroix in 2009. Goulet was in line to succeed Francois Giguere, who was fired as Colorado's general manager earlier in 2009, but Lacroix instead hired current general manager Greg Sherman.

Well, if we get the guy, we can at least go ahead and start cheering for the Flames full bore this season. I've been caught in this mental purgatory, where part of me wants them to tank, and another part that always cheers for a goal/win.

Well he kind of did COL a favor by signing the Flames one instead of the Canucks one. Much higher 1st rounder if the deal is completed
Also, that might mean that the idiot GM of the Canucks is losing faith in Kesler. Hmmmmm

I honestly have no idea what Colorado is going to do.
The more I think about it, this is a good move that I like more and more. It is high risk but this move improves the team now and in the future. Hard not to like moves that help now and later.

1st rounder? How are we suppose to get Clutterbuck? hehe
Wouldn't have liked it a month ago but when you are down to 1 center and backlund looks to be made of glass and Cevernka is a healthy scratch, i think it's a great move.

It actually should go without saying. This case is a little different since ROR and the Avs have a broken relationship, but system is designed such that you have to massively overpay to land an RFA because anything reasonable will be matched. O'Reilly is 22 years old. It is not likely he is ready to be a $6 million player next year while also being judged against whatever the first round pick turns out to be.
By definition, offer sheets carry a ridiculously high level of risk.

If that 2014 trade deadline date is accurate, then Feaster deserves mad props if you ask me.

hilarious.
i'll go on record to say if Calgary's first is a top 10 pick, this is a bad move...
the guy will have zero supporting cast and is a No.2 centerman... not worth a top 10 pick.

Not if the other Olympic years are any indication. The deadlines in '06 and '10 were both in March.

Either way. Having Backlund, Stajan and O'reilly for the next season would look real good. with O'reilly and Backlund 1a/1b. I will not complain about that.
