Is it a good move? I don't know, but at least he did something.
O'Reilly is a great young player. 22 years old, 236 NHL games played already, coming off a season where he won 52.6% of faceoffs and scored 18 goals, 55 points.
|
The kids 21 he's not small he's got a good skill set he wins faceoffs and has shown massive growth. He's also more of a sure thing then a first round draft pick.
Everything indicates first line center potential.
If this is how we get rid of a first round draft pick by getting a 21 years old that is a near sure thing that solves a lot of different problems, center ice face off wins pp effectiveness, then I do this.

yeah man, id love to have a bunch of 15 year old jankowskis waiting 5 years to play in the NHL while we all hate the flames, bitching and moaning every ####ing day about how they dont do anything.
Good move. im saying 75% chance we see him in a Flames jersey next week.

There are a lot of question marks with O'Reilly.
|
Especially since his breakout year saw him spend 85% of his TOI with Landeskog.

CP has been screaming for the Flames to get a great young centre. The Flames are attempting to get a great young centre. They are very hard to acquire.

|
I think Feaster at this point is saying that the Flames are willing to part with the first for an O'Reilly or Coutourier type center. If COL matches dont be surprised if something like this happens.
And with CGY in COL tonight I am sure they worked out a feasable plan to have COL expedite their decision.

Do not get the hate at all. I don't see much of a downside here.
He's essentially a draft pick given his age, but he's a proven player already. 8-15 draft picks where we'd probably be picking aren't.
I get that people are scared of giving up a potentially top 3 pick, but O'Reilly makes this already bubble team better. We're not drafting in the top 3 with him the lineup.
O'Reilly is easily worth an 8th-15th overall pick plus a third.
I really don't see how this is a bad thing. I don't see how the stunts any potential rebuild that is not happening anyways.

Well this is what Phoenix GM thought of the offer sheet:
Quote:
Don Maloney RE: Ryan O'Reilly and offers sheets: “Every club -- I don’t care who it is -- every club will protect its young assets. “I guarantee you (the Avalanche) would match the offer or you would have seen more teams focused in that area. It’s really rare -- I think you’d have to go all the way back to Dustin Penner -- where a club did not match.”

And there aren't with draft picks?
At least O'Reilly has produced to some result in the NHL. If Colorado asked for a 1st and a 3rd for him, he would have been gone a long time ago. The cap bit will be interesting to deal with but who do we need to hand money to exactly? Who else is our upcoming star youth?

Unless we get another 1st, I see this as a "win now" move that if it doesn't work out (and imo this team needs a lot more then a player who at this point is a "decent" center) leaves us with a young player with solid potential at least. Smart move by Feaster who is probably being pressured to win now but knows it's futile.
I'd still prefer a complete dismantle.
Again if we get a 1st, I'll change my tune.
|
You're not understanding how this works.
Unless it's a top five pick, the chances of getting a player as good as O'Reilly are extremely slim.
Instead, we accelerate that player into the lineup and have him as a 3 season veteran at 22 years old, already one of the best young defensive centres in the game.
If he was 32, sure, your assertion would be correct.
If it works out we sign him, it's something that helps us now and moving forward because of how young and how good he is.

I dont see this team finishing in the bottom 5, they're too good. They will likely be a 20-16th place team even without O'Rielly.
This is a solid move, the only way this would turn out to be a bad move is if our 1st rounder turned out to be a top 5 pick.
At the moment I would rather have a 22yr old centre who got 55 points last season then the "hope" that we get a player that even makes it into the NHL and registers a 55 point season.
Who knows, maybe him and Baertschi work out well together...
|
The risk here is that he turns into a matt stajan instead of a top center. If you give up a 1st and 3rd in a deep draft for a mediocre player you've really crippled the team for years.
I guess on the other side, you have to hand it to Feaster for not making another typical safe trade that he loves doing.

Thinking more about it, let's say the Flames don't make the playoffs. How does this move prevent them from rebuilding? It doesn't. They can still sell the vets at the deadline anyways, and now have R O R as a building block on the team.
The only question becomes, what is going to be better. Our would be draft pick, or ROR?

Feaster is a complete idiot. This organization is going no where with management like this.

The ownership mandate was never going to change. If it was not Feaster it would have been someone else in a year or 2 doing the same thing.

Maybe there is more going on than this offer. Could be we are going to trade a prospect with them to get one of our draft picks back.
You never know.

Unless our 1st round pick is top 5 pick...which i doubt RoR is a great young player.
